Chapter 7: A Step Forward
Part 7
The darkness of the night seemed to dissipate as they walked, the city lights illuminating their path like a beacon of hope. Kageyama's feet moved mechanically, his mind still reeling from the conversation they had just had. Oikawa's words had struck a chord deep within him, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like he was taking a step forward. As they approached the volleyball court, memories came flooding back. He remembered the thrill of competition, the rush of adrenaline as he dove for a spike, the sense of camaraderie with his teammates. It was a bittersweet nostalgia, but it was also a reminder of what he had lost. Oikawa seemed to sense his emotions, and he guided Kageyama to a stop in front of the court. The lights were off, but the empty seats seemed to echo with the cheers of the crowd, the sound of laughter and tears. Kageyama felt a pang in his chest, but this time, it wasn't just pain - it was also a sense of longing. "Do you want to go in?" Oikawa asked, his voice low and gentle. Kageyama hesitated, unsure of what to do. But then, he nodded, and Oikawa led him to the entrance. The doors creaked open, and they stepped inside, the silence enveloping them like a shroud. The court was dark, but Kageyama's eyes adjusted slowly, and he saw the outline of the net, the seats, the scoreboard. It was all so familiar, yet so different. He felt like a ghost haunting the place of his past, reliving memories that were both fond and painful. Oikawa moved beside him, his presence a comforting warmth in the darkness. "You don't have to do this, Kageyama," he said, his voice soft. "But if you want to, I'm here for you." Kageyama took a deep breath, and then, without a word, he began to walk onto the court. The floor creaked beneath his feet, and he felt a shiver run down his spine. It was like stepping into a different world, one where the past and present collided. As he reached the center of the court, Kageyama stopped, his eyes fixed on the net. He felt a lump form in his throat, and then, without warning, tears began to fall. They streamed down his face, hot and bitter, as he remembered the triumphs and defeats, the laughter and the tears. Oikawa moved beside him, his arm wrapping around Kageyama's shoulders in a gentle hug. "It's okay, Kageyama," he whispered. "You're not alone. I'm here for you." The tears continued to fall, but this time, they were not just tears of sorrow - they were also tears of release. Kageyama felt like he was finally letting go of the burdens he had carried for so long, like he was finally allowing himself to heal. As they stood there, wrapped in the silence of the court, Kageyama knew that he still had a long way to go. But for the first time in a long time, he felt like he was taking a step forward, like he was leaving the darkness behind and stepping into the light. And with Oikawa by his side, he felt like he could face anything that came his way.
