Melodic Contrast

Part 2

The fluorescent lights of the choir room cast a warm, golden glow over the rows of music stands and chairs, a stark contrast to the harsh brightness of the hallway Ava had just left. As she pushed open the door, the smooth sound of vocal warm-ups enveloped her, and she felt a sense of relief wash over her. The scent of old music sheets and dusty piano keys filled her nostrils, transporting her to a place of comfort and solace. Ava made her way to her usual spot in the back row, exchanging quiet hellos with her fellow choir members as she settled in. The familiar routine of choir was a welcome respite from the awkwardness of her interview with Soren. She took a deep breath, feeling her shoulders relax as she began to hum along with the warm-up exercises. Ms. Koh, the choir director, stood at the front of the room, her eyes twinkling with warmth as she surveyed her students. "Alright, let's move on to some actual singing," she announced, gesturing to the sheet music on the stands. "Today, we're working on the harmonies for 'Lux Aeterna'." As the choir launched into the piece, Ava felt her voice blend with the others, creating a rich, velvety sound that filled the room. She closed her eyes, letting the music wash over her, and felt her heart begin to soar. This was her happy place – where the world outside receded, and all that mattered was the sound, the movement, and the sense of community. As they worked through the piece, Ava's mind began to wander. She thought about Soren, and the way his eyes had crinkled at the corners when he smiled. She thought about her recent string of lackluster relationships, and the way she had begun to wonder if she was simply not cut out for romance. And she thought about the sense of disconnection she had been feeling lately – like she was just going through the motions, without any real sense of purpose or direction. When Ms. Koh called a break, Ava opened her eyes to find her fellow choir member, Julian, watching her with a thoughtful expression. "Hey, Ava, are you okay?" he asked, his voice low and concerned. "You seemed a little distracted during the warm-ups." Ava shrugged, feeling a flutter of embarrassment. "Just a little stressed, I guess. Had a weird morning." Julian nodded sympathetically. "I know the feeling. But you sounded great during the piece – really connected." Ava smiled, feeling a small sense of gratitude towards her friend. "Thanks, Julian. That means a lot coming from you." As they chatted, Ava felt a sense of ease settle over her. This was what she loved about choir – the sense of camaraderie, the shared passion for music, and the feeling of being part of something bigger than herself. And as they returned to their seats, ready to tackle the rest of the rehearsal, Ava felt a sense of hope that she hadn't felt in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, things were starting to look up.
