Chapter 7: The Road to Recovery
Part 6
The bright lights of the hospital room pierced through Ashley's foggy mind as she slowly regained consciousness. She looked up at Erica, who was sitting beside her, a look of relief and concern etched on her face. Ashley tried to reach out to Erica, her hand weakly extending from the bed. Erica quickly grasped Ashley's hand, holding it tight. "Hey, I'm here," she said softly. Ashley's eyes locked onto Erica's, and she attempted to speak, but her voice was barely a whisper. As Ashley struggled to form words, her gaze drifted to the cup of water on her bedside table. She tried to reach for it, her hand trembling with effort. Erica shook her head, a gentle smile on her face. "You can't have anything to drink yet, sorry Ash," she said. "The doctor said in a few hours." The doctor, who had been quietly observing the scene, stepped forward. "Let's not get you too excited just yet, Ashley," he said. "You've had a long procedure, and your body needs time to recover. We'll get you hydrated and comfortable soon, I promise." Ashley nodded weakly, her eyes drooping as the anesthesia continued to wear off. Erica squeezed her hand, trying to comfort her. "You're doing great, Ash," she said. "Just rest for now. I'm here for you." As the doctor and nurse finished their checks, Erica leaned in closer to Ashley. "I'm not going anywhere," she whispered. "You're safe, and I'm here to take care of you." Ashley's eyes fluttered open again, and she looked up at Erica with a faint smile. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Erica smiled back, her eyes filling with tears. "You don't have to thank me, Ash," she said. "I love you. I'm here for you, no matter what." The doctor and nurse finished their rounds, leaving Erica alone with Ashley. As the hospital room grew quiet, Erica held Ashley's hand, watching over her as she slowly drifted off to sleep, exhausted but safe.
