A Month of Bliss Shattered
Part 15
The next month was a whirlwind of dates and stolen moments for Doug and Pam. They spent every spare minute they could together, exploring the city, trying new restaurants, and just enjoying each other's company. One night, Doug took Pam to a rooftop bar with a stunning view of the city, and they sat together, watching the sunset and laughing like they had known each other for years. Another evening, they found themselves at a small art gallery, admiring the work of local artists and discussing their favorite pieces. As the days turned into weeks, their relationship continued to blossom. They would meet for coffee during Pam's breaks, and Doug would often surprise her with small gifts or sweet notes. Pam loved the way Doug made her feel, like she was the only person in the world. She felt seen and heard, and she knew that she could be herself around him. But on one ordinary Tuesday, chaos erupted. Doug was working his shift at the ER when a disgruntled patient stormed in, waving a gun and threatening to shoot everyone. The ER was immediately put on lockdown, and the police were called to the scene. The patient, a tall, thin man with a scowl on his face, began to rant and rave, demanding to speak to the hospital administrator. The police tried to calm him down, speaking to him in soothing tones and trying to reason with him. But the man was beyond reason. He became more and more agitated, his voice rising to a shout. Suddenly, he raised his gun and fired. The sound of gunfire echoed through the ER, and people screamed and ran for cover. Doug's heart sank as he watched in horror, unable to move or do anything to stop the man. The gunman fired again and again, the shots ringing out in rapid succession. Doug counted at least a dozen shots, his mind reeling with fear. And then, he saw Pam. She was standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with shock, and then she stumbled backwards, clutching her arm. Doug's world went dark. He felt like he was in slow motion, unable to move or react. He saw the gunman continue to fire, saw the police try to take him down, and saw Pam fall to the ground. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. Doug's training kicked in, and he rushed to Pam's side, trying to assess the situation. He saw that she was bleeding from a wound in her arm, and he quickly grabbed a nearby gauze to apply pressure. "Pam, oh my God, Pam!" he exclaimed, his voice shaking with fear. Pam's eyes fluttered open, and she looked up at Doug. "Doug?" she whispered, her voice weak. Doug held her close, trying to keep her calm. "I've got you, Pam. I've got you. Help is on the way." The police finally managed to subdue the gunman, and paramedics rushed in to take Pam to surgery. Doug was left standing alone, his heart heavy with fear and worry. He couldn't lose Pam. Not now, not ever.
