The New Guy
Part 4
The construction site was buzzing with activity, the smell of sawdust and fresh concrete hanging in the air as I watched from the sidelines. Carter was already there, directing the crew with a series of gruff commands and hand gestures. I stood outside the fence, observing the chaos with a mixture of fascination and discomfort. The sun beat down on my skin, warming the back of my neck as I squinted against the glare. As I scanned the site, my eyes landed on a new face. He was tall, with broad shoulders and a messy mop of dark hair that fell across his forehead. His eyes, a deep, piercing blue, seemed to gleam with amusement as he worked. I felt a jolt of surprise, and my gaze lingered on him for a moment longer than necessary. Who was this guy? Carter noticed me standing there and ambled over, a banana peel dangling from his lips. "Hey, cuz, what brings you out here?" he asked, his voice like a low rumble of thunder. I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "Just thought I'd check it out. See what you're up to." Carter snorted, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "You know I'm always up to something. You should come back and check out the new digs sometime." I nodded, feeling a familiar surge of unease. Carter's construction site was not exactly the most welcoming place, but I knew he'd show me around if I asked. As I stood there, I noticed the new guy glancing over at me, his eyes meeting mine for a brief moment before he looked away. I felt a flutter in my chest, and my face grew warm. "Hey, that's Adrian," Carter said, following my gaze. "He's the new guy on the crew." I nodded, trying to play it cool. "He seems...different." Carter raised an eyebrow. "Different? What's that supposed to mean?" I shrugged, feeling a little self-conscious. "I don't know. He just seems... quieter, or something." Carter chuckled. "Adrian's a quiet one, all right. But don't let that fool you. He's got a sharp tongue and a quick wit. Fits right in with the rest of us." As we watched, Adrian looked up and caught my eye again. This time, he held my gaze for a fraction of a second longer, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. I quickly looked away, trying to brush off the sensation. Carter nudged me with his elbow. "You okay, cuz? You look a little... distracted." I shook my head, trying to clear it. "I'm fine. Just... just checking things out." Carter snorted. "You're not exactly the construction type, kiddo. Why don't you go back home and leave the hard work to us?" I nodded, feeling a familiar sense of relief. Maybe Carter was right. Maybe I didn't belong here, in this world of hammers and sawdust. But as I turned to leave, I caught Adrian's eye once more, and I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be seen by him, to be noticed. As I walked away from the construction site, I couldn't shake the feeling that Adrian's gaze had left on me. It was as if he'd seen something in me that I hadn't even seen myself, something that made me feel... alive. The rest of the day passed in a blur, my mind wandering back to the construction site and the new guy. I found myself wondering what he was like, what made him tick. Was he as tough as he seemed, or was there more to him? As I lay in bed that night, I couldn't help but think about Adrian, and the way he'd looked at me. It was a strange, tingling sensation, like my skin was buzzing with electricity. I felt a flutter in my chest, and my heart beat a little faster. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I was noticing things, really noticing things. And it was starting to feel like I was waking up, slowly, to the world around me.
