Chapter 22: A Life-Changing Moment

Part 21

A Life-Changing Moment Ashley's eyes locked onto Ethan's, her gaze searching for a reaction. She had expected shock, excitement, or maybe even fear, but what she got was silence. Ethan's face was expressionless, and he just stared back at her, his eyes wide with surprise. "Are you going to say something?" Ashley asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She felt a lump form in her throat as she waited for his response. The silence seemed to stretch on forever, and Ashley's anxiety grew. She had expected Ethan to be upset or angry, but his calm demeanor was unnerving. Ethan's eyes blinked slowly, and he took a deep breath before speaking. "Ashley, I...I don't know what to say," he stammered. Ashley felt a pang of disappointment. She had hoped that Ethan would have some words of encouragement or excitement, but instead, he seemed just as lost as she was. "I'm sorry," Ethan continued, "I just...this is a lot to take in." Ashley nodded, understanding. She knew that this news was a shock to both of them, and it would take time to process. Ethan stood up and walked over to Ashley, pulling her into a hug. "We'll figure this out together, okay?" he said, his voice filled with conviction. Ashley felt a sense of relief wash over her as she hugged him back. She knew that she wasn't alone in this, and that Ethan was committed to facing this new reality with her. As they stood there, holding each other, Ashley's mind began to wander to all the things they would need to do. They would need to tell Ender, and figure out how to balance their lives with a new baby. But for now, she just savored the moment, and the comfort of having Ethan by her side. Ethan pulled back and looked at Ashley, a small smile on his face. "Let's take this one step at a time, okay?" he said. Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Ethan. She knew that this journey wouldn't be easy, but with him by her side, she felt more confident. As they stood there, Ashley's phone rang, breaking the moment. She hesitated for a second before answering it. "Hello?" she said, her voice still shaking slightly. "Ashley, it's Ender's teacher. I just wanted to confirm that you're bringing his homework to him." Ashley sighed, feeling a sense of normalcy wash over her. "Yes, I'm on my way," she said. Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Do you need to go?" Ashley nodded. "Yeah, I forgot his homework, and now I have to bring it to him." Ethan nodded. "I'll go with you." As they headed out the door, Ashley felt a sense of trepidation. They had a long road ahead of them, but she was ready to face it with Ethan by her side.
