"An Unwanted Invitation"
Part 1
Charlie sighed and rubbed his temples, still trying to process the sudden turn of events. He had been having a lovely conversation with Nick on the phone, and then his sister Sarah had to interrupt, making things awkward. He glared at her as she stood in the doorway, a smug look on her face. "It's none of your business," Charlie said, trying to keep his tone neutral. "I bet it's your boyfriend, isn't it?" Sarah asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You should invite him over for dinner," she suggested, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "So you can steal him away from me, no way," Charlie replied, rolling his eyes. But before he could react further, Sarah suddenly sprinted downstairs, yelling, "Mom!" Charlie let out a frustrated sigh and laid back on his bed, but his peace was short-lived. He soon heard his mother's voice calling him. He reluctantly got out of bed and made his way downstairs. "What?" he asked, his tone annoyed. "Why didn't you tell me that you had a boyfriend?" his mom asked, a curious expression on her face. "I want him to come over for dinner," she added, her voice firm. Charlie's eyes widened in panic. "Mom, know that Sarah will..." but before he could finish, his mother raised her hand. "No discussions," she said firmly. "I want him to come over for dinner. Is that understood?" Charlie nodded reluctantly, feeling a sense of dread wash over him. He knew his mom could be overbearing at times, but this was taking it too far. "Okay, okay," he said, trying to placate her. "But, mom, can I at least talk to Nick about it first?" His mom nodded, a small smile on her face. "Of course, dear. But I expect you to invite him over soon." Charlie trudged back upstairs, feeling a sense of unease. He flopped onto his bed and picked up his phone, dialing Nick's number. When Nick answered, Charlie let out a deep sigh. "Hey, baby," Nick said, his voice cheerful. "What's wrong?" Charlie hesitated, unsure of how to break the news. "My mom wants you to come over for dinner," he said, trying to sound casual. There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Really?" Nick asked, his tone cautious. Charlie nodded, even though Nick couldn't see him. "Yeah. And it's not just that. My sister Sarah is being her usual self, and I have a feeling she's going to make things...interesting." Nick chuckled. "Don't worry, I'll survive. When were you thinking?" Charlie thought for a moment. "How about this weekend?" "Sounds good to me," Nick replied. "But, Charlie?" "Yeah?" Charlie asked. "Be prepared for anything," Nick warned. Charlie smiled wryly, feeling a sense of trepidation. He knew that with his family, anything could happen. And with Sarah involved, it was bound to be a wild ride.
