**Chapter 1: The Unlikely Duo**

Part 1

The sun beat down on the school's swimming pool, where Liliana Stocks and Elias Martínez were busy stretching and preparing for their next practice. Liliana, a Mexican-Filipino girl with a chubby build, short black curly hair, and dark brown eyes, grinned at Elias as they exchanged banter. Elias, a tall, lean, muscular white Mexican boy with short black hair and dark brown eyes, playfully rolled his eyes in response. Despite their physical differences, the two were inseparable. They had met on the swim team during their freshman year, bonding over their shared love of the sport and their quick wit. Over the years, their friendship had only deepened, with Liliana often joking that Elias was her swim-buddy-for-life. As they began to warm up, Liliana's coach, Mr. Thompson, blew his whistle, signaling the start of practice. Elias and Liliana dove into the pool, their movements fluid and synchronized as they stroked through the water. After a grueling session, they climbed out of the pool, exhausted but exhilarated. As they towel-dried and dressed, Elias turned to Liliana with a mischievous glint in his eye. "Hey, want to come over to my place on Halloween night? My mom's going to make some awesome candy, and we can watch some scary movies." Liliana's face lit up. "That sounds like so much fun! I've been dying to see that new horror movie. Plus, I love your mom's candy – she's the best!" Elias chuckled. "Yeah, my mom's a total sweetheart. We can make it a sleepover, if you want. I'll even let you pick the movies." Liliana grinned, already imagining the thrills and chills they would experience. "Sounds like a plan. But don't expect me to stay up too late – I have an early practice the next day." Elias nodded, his dark brown eyes sparkling with excitement. "Don't worry, I'll make sure you're home safe and sound. It'll be a blast, Liliana. Just the two of us, watching scary movies and having a great time." Little did they know, this Halloween night would be one that would change their friendship – and their lives – forever. As they parted ways, Liliana couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation, wondering what the night had in store for her and her best friend Elias.
