"A Love in Secret"
Part 2
Days passed, and Emily couldn't shake off the memory of James Fletcher, or was it William Tuner? She had shown his note to no one, not even her cousin Alexander, and had kept it hidden in her room, re-reading it whenever she felt alone. The sound of horse hooves and the rustling of leaves outside her window made her heart skip a beat every time, hoping it might be a messenger with a letter from him. It wasn't long before her wish came true. A young boy, with a messy mop of hair and a wide grin, appeared at the farm gate, holding out a letter for Emily. "For you, miss," he said, with a tip of his hat. Emily's heart racing, she took the letter and thanked him, trying to hide her excitement from her family. As she walked towards the barn, her father, James Hamilton, looked up from his work, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "Who's that from, lass?" he asked, but Emily quickly made up a story about a friend from school. Her father seemed skeptical, but he let it drop, and Emily breathed a sigh of relief. She waited until she was safely inside the barn, surrounded by the familiar scent of hay and the soft lowing of cows, before opening the letter. Her hands trembled as she unfolded the paper and began to read: "My dearest Emily, I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to apologize for not telling you my true name when we met. My name is William Tuner, or Will, for short. I didn't think I could trust you at first, given our...differences. But as I got to know you, I realized that I wanted to be honest with you. I was a blacksmith's apprentice in England, but I was shipped off to the colonies when things got out of hand. I didn't have a choice in the matter, and I've been stuck here ever since. I know we have strong opinions on the matter of independence, and I respect that. But I also know that I don't agree with it. I believe in order and stability, and I think the British government can provide that. Despite our differences, I couldn't help but be drawn to you. Your beautiful face has been etched in my mind since the day we met. I wish I could see more of you, but I know that no one would approve. Your family, in particular, would not be pleased. Yours, Will" Emily's heart skipped a beat as she read the letter, feeling a mix of emotions. She was touched by Will's honesty and his willingness to be vulnerable with her, but she was also scared of what her family would think if they found out. She hid the letter in her bodice, feeling like she was keeping a secret treasure. Over the next few weeks, Emily received several more letters from Will, each one more passionate and sincere than the last. She would sneak into the barn, hiding from her father and brother, to read his words and respond in kind. Their letters became a lifeline, a connection to a world beyond the farm and the conflict that seemed to be escalating by the day. As she wrote back to Will, Emily couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them. Would they be able to find a way to be together, despite their differences? Or would their love be doomed from the start, a casualty of the war that seemed to be tearing the colonies apart? Only time would tell, but for now, Emily was content to savor the secret of their love, hidden away in the barn, where no one could find it.
