A Fragile Facade
Part 45
Taehyun's eyes locked onto Joon-oh's, a mixture of emotions swirling inside him. He could see the concern etched on Joon-oh's face, but he was more determined to avoid his friend's pity. "I'm fine, Joon-oh," he said, forcing a weak smile onto his lips. "Just a little tired, that's all." Joon-oh's gaze lingered on Taehyun's face, as if searching for something more. Taehyun could almost see the wheels turning in his friend's mind, trying to decipher the truth behind his words. He knew Joon-oh wasn't buying it, but he didn't care. He couldn't bear the thought of being pitied or coddled. That would be the final blow to his already fragile ego. Joon-oh nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving Taehyun's face. "Okay, if you're sure," he said, his voice measured. "But Min-ji's been really worried about you. She's been trying to reach you for days." Taehyun shrugged, feeling a twinge of guilt. He knew he should talk to Min-ji, but the thought of facing her, of being honest with her, was still too overwhelming. "I'll talk to her soon," he promised, trying to sound convincing. Joon-oh sighed, his shoulders sagging in disappointment. "Taehyun, I think we need to talk," he said, his voice low and serious. "About what's been going on with you. You've been distant for weeks, and Min-ji's at her wit's end. She doesn't know what to do." Taehyun felt a surge of defensiveness, but he pushed it down. He knew Joon-oh was coming from a good place, even if he didn't want to hear the truth. "What's to talk about?" he asked, trying to sound nonchalant. Joon-oh's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing. "Don't play dumb, Taehyun," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "I know something's wrong. You've been using again, haven't you?" Taehyun's heart skipped a beat as he stared at Joon-oh. How did he know? He felt a wave of shame wash over him, but he refused to let it consume him. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the conversation that was about to unfold. "I don't know what you're talking about," he lied, trying to keep his voice steady. Joon-oh's expression turned skeptical, but he didn't push the issue. Instead, he walked over to the couch and sat down, his eyes never leaving Taehyun's face. "Taehyun, I know you're not fine," he said, his voice soft. "And I'm not going anywhere until you tell me the truth." Taehyun felt a lump form in his throat as he stared at Joon-oh. He knew he couldn't keep up the charade forever. Eventually, he would have to face the music, and it might as well be with his best friend by his side. But as he looked into Joon-oh's eyes, he saw a glimmer of understanding, of empathy, and it gave him a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, he could get through this after all.
