"A Harsh Reality"
Part 20
As Ashley sat in stunned silence, the fluorescent lights above seemed to flicker in sync with her racing heartbeat. Karen's words still lingered in the air, but it wasn't until the sound of Officer Johnson's voice that Ashley's numbness began to wear off, replaced by an icy dread. "Ashley, we've worked out a deal with the DA. Given your mother's passing and your current situation, they're willing to offer you a plea deal: two months in county jail, community service, and counseling." Ashley's eyes widened, her gaze fixed on Officer Johnson as if he was speaking a foreign language. Two months in prison? The thought sent a chill down her spine. Her mind reeled as she processed the news, her thoughts racing with visions of bars, confinement, and loss of freedom. Ender, sensing her distress, whimpered in her arms, and Ashley's grip on him tightened. The social worker's office seemed to shrink, the walls closing in on her as Karen continued, "Ashley, we're also facing some issues with your housing situation. Your mother's rent was subsidized, and with her passing, it's likely that the subsidy will be revoked. You'll need to find a new place to live, and fast." Ashley's thoughts swirled, her anxiety spiking. Lose her house? Where would she go? And what about Ender? How would she provide for him? The officer's expression remained stern but sympathetic. "And as for Ender's custody, Ashley, we need to consider what's best for him. If you're going to be incarcerated, we can't just leave him with you. We'll need to find alternative arrangements." Ashley felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Lose Ender? The thought sent a wave of panic coursing through her veins. She clutched her son tighter, as if she could physically hold onto him. The room seemed to spin around her, the sounds and faces blurring together. Ashley's world was crumbling, and she was powerless to stop it. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of uncertainty, with no lifeline in sight. Ender's tiny hands grasped her shirt, and she looked down at him, her eyes welling up with tears. As she sat there, frozen in fear, Ashley realized that she was on the brink of losing everything that mattered. Her mother, her freedom, her home, and her child – all slipping away from her. The numbness had worn off, replaced by a raw, aching pain that threatened to consume her. Ashley's only thought was to hold onto Ender, to keep him safe, and to pray that somehow, someway, she could find a way to put the pieces of her shattered life back together.
