Confronting the Past
Part 17
Luka led Pamela to a quiet corner of the ER, away from the hustle and bustle of the medical staff. They stood facing each other, the tension between them palpable. "I know I owe you an explanation," Luka said, his eyes locked on hers. "I took a leave of absence from my work at the hospital." Pamela's expression softened slightly, her curiosity piqued. "A family emergency?" she asked, her voice gentle. Luka nodded, a small smile on his face. "My mother's health took a turn for the worse. I needed to be there for her and my family." Pamela's expression turned understanding, and she felt a pang of sympathy for Luka. She had always known that his family was important to him, and she could see the strain on his face. "I'm sorry, Luka," she said, her voice sincere. "I had no idea. But I have to ask, why didn't you at least send a text? I thought... I thought we were closer than that." Luka's eyes dropped, and he took a deep breath before looking back at her. "I know, and I'm sorry. I was in a dark place, Pam. I didn't know how to reach out, and I didn't want to burden you with my problems." Pamela felt a sting from his words, but she also felt a sense of understanding. She had been hurt by his absence, but she could see that he was trying to make amends. "I was hurt, Luka," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "I thought we had something real, something that meant something to both of us. And then you just disappeared." Luka's eyes filled with regret, and he took a step closer to her. "I know, and I'm sorry. I was wrong to disappear like that. Can I... can I start over, Pam? Can we try again?" Pamela hesitated, unsure of what to do. Part of her wanted to give Luka another chance, to see if they still had something special. But another part of her was scared, scared of being hurt again by the man who had broken her heart. She looked at Luka, searching for answers in his eyes. She saw sincerity there, and a deep regret for his past actions. But she also saw a hint of uncertainty, a sense that he wasn't sure if he could make things right between them. Pamela took a deep breath, her mind racing with thoughts and emotions. She didn't know if she was ready to forgive Luka, to give him another chance. But she did know that she needed time to think, to process her feelings and figure out what she wanted. "I need some time, Luka," she said finally, her voice firm. "I need to think about everything, about us and what we had. Can you give me that?" Luka nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. "Of course, Pam. I'll give you all the time you need. I just want to make things right between us, to prove to you that I'm committed to us." Pamela nodded, feeling a sense of hope mixed with trepidation. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew that she needed to take things slow, to figure out if she was ready to face the past again.
