Chapter 274: The League's Hidden Agenda
Part 274
"Oh I'm not interested in joining the League, Shigaraki," I said, laughing nervously as I tried to deflect the tension in the room. Shigaraki's smile faltered for a moment, and Dabi's eyes narrowed, his gaze intensifying. Shigaraki's expression quickly recovered, and he chuckled, a low, menacing sound. "Ah, Vesper-chan, you're so quick to assume I'm asking you to join the League," he said, leaning forward, his eyes glinting with amusement. "But that's not what this is about. At least, not yet." I felt a shiver run down my spine as he emphasized the "yet." What did he mean by that? Was he planning on making me a member of the League eventually? "I think there's been a misunderstanding, Shigaraki-sensei," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I'm not interested in getting involved with the League. I'm happy doing my own thing." Shigaraki leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "I see," he said, his voice dripping with skepticism. "And what exactly is this 'thing' you do, Vesper-chan? You're a vigilante, using your Quirks to fight crime on the streets. But you know as well as I do that that's not sustainable. Eventually, you'll get caught, or worse, you'll get hurt." I felt a surge of defensiveness, but I pushed it down, trying to keep my cool. "I'm managing just fine so far," I said, trying to sound confident. Shigaraki chuckled again, the sound sending a shiver down my spine. "I'm sure you think you are, Vesper-chan," he said. "But the League can offer you so much more. Resources, support, a chance to make a real difference. And I think you're smart enough to see that." I shook my head, trying to keep my fear at bay. "I'm not interested," I repeated, trying to sound firm. Dabi spoke up for the first time, his voice low and smooth. "I think you're misunderstanding the situation, Vesper-chan," he said, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You see, we're not asking you to join the League. At least, not yet. We're making you an offer you can't refuse." I felt a chill run down my spine as Shigaraki leaned forward, his eyes locked on mine. "You see, Vesper-chan, we have a little problem on our hands. A problem that requires your... unique skills. And we're willing to make it worth your while." I swallowed hard, trying to keep my heart from racing. What did they have planned for me? And how was I going to get out of it alive?
