Racing Against Time
Part 89
The ambulance screeched to a halt outside the hospital entrance, and the paramedics quickly sprang into action, lifting Ashley's stretcher out of the vehicle and rushing her into the emergency room. Avan followed close behind, his eyes fixed on Ashley's pale face. As they wheeled her into the labor and delivery unit, a flurry of activity erupted around her. Nurses and doctors rushed to her side, attaching monitors and IV lines to her body. Avan watched in a daze, feeling helpless as the medical team worked to stabilize Ashley. One of the nurses, a kind-faced woman with a warm smile, turned to Avan and said, "Sir, we're going to try to stop the labor. We need to get her on some medication and get her stable." Avan nodded, still feeling a bit disoriented. He looked around the room, taking in the beeping machines and the sterile smell of the hospital. He spotted a phone on the wall and quickly grabbed it, dialing the number of their babysitter. As he waited for someone to pick up, Avan's eyes landed on a nearby bench, and he quickly sat down, trying to catch his breath. He had been running on adrenaline since the paramedics arrived, and now that he was sitting still, he felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him. The phone rang several times before their babysitter, Sarah, picked up. "Hello?" she said, her voice cheerful. "Hey, Sarah, it's Avan. We're on our way to the hospital. Ashley's in labor, and we need you to watch Alex for us." Sarah's tone immediately turned serious. "Okay, don't worry, I've got everything under control here. How's Ashley doing?" Avan took a deep breath before answering. "She's...she's okay, I think. The paramedics are trying to stop the labor, but we're not sure if it's going to work." Sarah offered words of reassurance, and Avan listened, feeling a small sense of relief. He hung up the phone and stood up, just as a nurse came over to him. "Sir, we need you to get changed into some scrubs," she said, holding out a pair of blue pants and a matching shirt. "You can go in with your wife now." Avan nodded, taking the scrubs from her. He quickly changed, feeling a sense of trepidation as he put on the unfamiliar clothes. As he walked back into the labor and delivery room, he spotted Avan holding their three-year-old son, Alex, in his arms. Alex's big brown eyes looked up at Avan, and he smiled, unaware of the chaos that was unfolding. "Avan, I've got him," Sarah said, handing Alex over to Avan. "You go take care of Ashley. I'll watch Alex here." Avan smiled weakly, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Sarah. He took Alex in his arms, giving him a squeeze. "Daddy's got to go help Mommy right now, buddy," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. Alex looked up at him curiously, but Avan just smiled and handed him a pacifier. "Here, suck on this for a minute, okay?" As Avan watched, Sarah quickly ushered Alex out of the room, leaving him alone with his thoughts. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for what lay ahead. The nurse came over to him, a tray of medication in her hand. "We're going to try to stop the labor with some medication," she explained. "We'll also be putting in a fetal monitoring strap to keep an eye on the baby's heart rate." Avan nodded, watching as the nurse expertly administered the medication and attached the monitoring strap to Ashley's abdomen. He took her hand, feeling a surge of love and worry. "I'm here, Ashley," he said, his voice shaking. "I'm not going anywhere." Ashley smiled weakly, her eyes locked on his. "I'm scared," she whispered. Avan squeezed her hand. "I'm scared too," he said. "But we're in this together. We'll get through it, okay?" As he spoke, the machines surrounding Ashley began to beep and whir, monitoring her vital signs and the baby's heart rate. Avan watched, his heart racing with anxiety, as the medical team worked to save their baby.
