Turbulent Moments Ahead
Part 69
The scene was still chaotic from the abrupt end to the ultrasound, with Alex's tantrum having left everyone in the room a bit shaken. Ashley was trying to calm him down, speaking softly and stroking his hair, but he was having none of it. The doctor, however, seemed unfazed by the outburst and began to explain the next step in the examination process. "Now, Ashley, I just need to draw some blood," she said, moving towards the necessary equipment. Ashley nodded, still trying to placate Alex, who was now clinging to her leg, his face red with distress. The doctor smiled reassuringly and continued to prepare for the blood draw. As she tied the tourniquet around Ashley's arm and began to clean the area, Alex's agitation reached a fever pitch. The sound of the doctor's gloves snapping into place seemed to trigger something in him, and he started to kick and scream, his tiny body thrashing about. Ashley's face was a deep shade of red as she desperately tried to calm Alex down, but he was beyond consolation. Tears streamed down his face as he wailed, the sound echoing off the walls of the small examination room. The nurse, who had been quietly observing the scene, took a step forward, her expression sympathetic. Ashley, mortified, apologized profusely. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice shaking. "He's autistic." The nurse nodded understandingly, and the doctor, too, seemed to relax a bit, her expression softening. "It's okay, Ashley," she said. "We've worked with children with autism before. We'll do our best to make this as smooth as possible." But for now, the situation seemed anything but smooth. Alex's tantrum showed no signs of abating, and Ashley was at a loss for how to calm him down. The doctor hesitated, unsure of how to proceed, as the chaos in the room continued to escalate.
