A Shift in Dynamics

Part 13

I stood in front of Rafael's house, camera equipment in hand, ready to film a new project with him. We had been working together for years, and I had always enjoyed our collaborations. As we finished filming, Rafael turned to me with a smile. "Hey, I wanted to talk to you about something," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "I've been thinking, it's time you met Sophia, my girlfriend." I felt a sudden pang of surprise, but I tried to play it cool. "Oh, that's great, Rafael. I'm happy for you." But then I hesitated, thinking about my plans for the evening. "I'm sorry, I have to go to a date tonight," I said, trying to sound casual. Rafael's expression changed, and he looked taken aback. He seemed to be searching for something to say, but his words got caught in his throat. "Oh, um, okay," he stuttered. There was an awkward silence between us, and I could sense that he was feeling uncomfortable, but he didn't quite know why. Then, a sudden suggestion popped out of his mouth. "You know what? Why don't we all go together? I can bring Sophia, and you can bring...your date." I raised an eyebrow, surprised by the suggestion. "I don't know, Rafael. I'm not sure that's a good idea." But he was insistent, and eventually, I agreed. As we made plans, I couldn't help but wonder what had just happened. Why had Rafael seemed so taken aback by my date? The night of the date arrived, and I met Rafael and Sophia at a trendy restaurant in the city. As we sat down at the table, I introduced my date, Max, to the group. Rafael shook his hand warmly, but I could sense a hint of curiosity in his eyes. As we ordered our food, Max suggested that we get shrimps. But as soon as Rafael heard that, his expression changed. "Wait, no, no shrimps," he said quickly. "You can't have shrimps." The table fell silent, and I realized why. Rafael had remembered my allergy. I had told him about it a long time ago, but I had almost forgotten myself. Max looked at me with concern. "You have an allergy?" he asked, and I nodded sheepishly. Rafael jumped in, taking charge. "Yeah, she has a pretty severe one. We should get something else." As the rest of the evening went on, I noticed that Rafael was being unusually protective of me. He was asking Max questions, trying to get to know him better, and I couldn't help but feel a little amused. It was like he was acting like a big brother, or even a boyfriend. But as the night drew to a close, I realized that Rafael's behavior was not just about being friendly. There was something more to it, something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. And as we said our goodbyes, I couldn't help but wonder what the future held for all of us.
