Into the Fray
Part 15
As they approached the guardhouse, Kael could see that it was a sturdy building with high walls and narrow windows, clearly designed to withstand an attack. The town guard was gathered outside, talking in hushed tones and glancing nervously at the surrounding countryside. Kael and Lyra walked up to them, and one of the guards noticed them. "Can I help you?" he asked, eyeing them warily. Kael explained that they had overheard a conversation about monsters gathering near the town, and they were there to offer their help. The guard looked at them skeptically, but one of the older guards stepped forward. "I'm Sergeant Thrain," he said. "We've had reports of a group of goblins and a larger creature, possibly a troll, gathering in the nearby woods. They've been raiding farms and causing trouble for the townspeople. We've tried to send out patrols, but they seem to be avoiding us." Kael nodded, his hand on the hilt of his sword. "We're willing to help deal with the problem," he said. "What's the situation like in the woods?" Sergeant Thrain nodded, grateful for their offer. "We've had reports of the monsters gathering in a clearing about a mile east of here. They're led by a particularly large and vicious goblin, who's been using dark magic to control the others. We've tried to sneak up on them, but they're too well-hidden." Lyra frowned. "Sounds like we'll need to be careful," she said. Sergeant Thrain handed Kael a rough map of the area. "Be careful, the woods can be treacherous, especially at night. If you can take care of the problem, we'd be grateful." Kael nodded, tucking the map into his belt. "We'll do our best. Is there anything we can use to help us?" Sergeant Thrain thought for a moment. "We've got some extra torches and a few potions that might help. I'll have them ready for you at the inn." Kael and Lyra nodded, and set off towards the inn to gather their gear. As they walked, Lyra turned to him. "Ready for this?" she asked. Kael grinned, patting his sword. "Born ready." At the inn, they gathered their gear, including a few potions and some extra torches. Lyra also packed a small bag with some food and water, just in case they needed it. Kael strapped on his sword and adjusted his pack, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation. As they finished up, Lyra turned to him. "You sure you're ready for this? We don't know what we're up against." Kael nodded, his eyes gleaming with confidence. "I've got my new sword, and I've got you. Let's go take care of those monsters." Lyra smiled, and they set off into the unknown, ready to face whatever dangers lay ahead.
