Into the Unknown
Part 14
Pam's eyes lingered on her phone, her mind replaying the conversation with Sophia. The line had gone dead, but she could still feel the weight of Sophia's words hanging in the air. Luka's gaze had locked onto hers, and she could sense his concern. "What does it mean?" Pam asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Luka's expression was grim. "I think Sophia wants to meet with you in person," he said. "And I have a feeling it's not going to be a pleasant conversation." Pam's thoughts were racing with possibilities. What could Sophia possibly want to talk about? And why was she being so cryptic? "I need to know what's going on," Pam said, her voice firm. "I need to know what Sophia wants from me." Luka hesitated, his eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape. "I think I can help you with that," he said finally. "But you have to promise me one thing." Pam's curiosity was piqued. "What's that?" she asked. Luka's voice dropped to a whisper. "You have to promise me you'll be careful. Sophia's not someone to be trifled with. She's powerful, and she'll stop at nothing to get what she wants." Pam's eyes locked onto Luka's, and she felt a surge of determination. She was not going to let Sophia intimidate her. "I'll be careful," she said, her voice firm. "But I need to know what's going on. Can you tell me more about your history with Sophia?" Luka's expression was hesitant, but he nodded finally. "I think it's time I told you the truth," he said. "But you have to promise me one thing." Pam's curiosity was piqued. "What's that?" she asked. Luka's voice dropped to a whisper. "You have to promise me you'll listen without judgment. It's not going to be easy to hear." Pam's heart was racing with anticipation. What could Luka possibly have to say that would be so difficult to hear? "I promise," she said, her voice firm. Luka took a deep breath, his eyes locked onto hers. "I was in deep financial trouble," he said. "I owed people money, and I didn't know how I was going to pay them back. Sophia offered to help me, but at a cost." Pam's eyes widened. "What kind of cost?" she asked. Luka's voice dropped to a whisper. "I had to do some... favors for her. I didn't know what I was getting myself into, but I was desperate. And Sophia... she promised me that it would all work out in the end." Pam's mind was reeling with questions. What kind of favors had Luka done for Sophia? And what did she have to do with Pam? As she sat there, trying to process everything, Pam heard a knock at the door. She hesitated for a moment before getting up to answer it. To her surprise, it was Alex, holding a cup of coffee and looking concerned. "Hey, I heard you and Sophia had a conversation," he said. "Is everything okay?" Pam's eyes locked onto Alex's, and she felt a surge of gratitude. She had a feeling she was going to need his help. "Not really," she said, her voice honest. "I think things are about to get complicated." Alex's expression was grim. "Well, in that case, I'm buying," he said, holding out the cup of coffee. "Let's talk."
