The Calm Before
Part 5
Ashley's heart sank as she listened to her father's ominous warning. She could feel Avan's eyes on her, his expression concerned, as she stood there, frozen in anxiety. The storm outside seemed to be intensifying, the wind howling and the rain pounding against the windows, mirroring the turmoil brewing inside her. "What did he say?" Avan asked, his voice low and gentle, as he wrapped his arms around her waist. Ashley took a deep breath, trying to process the venom in her father's voice. "He said it's not over," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. Avan's grip on her tightened. "What does that mean?" he asked, his eyes scanning her face. Ashley shook her head, feeling a sense of unease. "I don't know, but I have a bad feeling." She glanced at the phone in her hand, the screen still displaying her father's name. The image seemed to taunt her, a reminder of the tension that had been building all night. As she stood there, trying to gather her thoughts, Avan guided her back to the couch. They sat down, Ender still sleeping peacefully in his crib, oblivious to the drama that had just unfolded. The silence between them was comfortable, a stark contrast to the tension that had filled the room earlier. But the calm was short-lived. Ashley's phone buzzed again, and she groaned, not wanting to deal with another confrontation. Avan, sensing her unease, encouraged her to answer it, but this time, it was a text from an unknown number. "Ashley, you need to be careful. Your father's not one to back down. He's been planning something, and I think it's going to affect you and Avan directly," the message read. Ashley's eyes widened as she showed the phone to Avan. "Who could have sent this?" she asked, her mind racing with possibilities. Avan's expression turned serious. "I don't know, but we need to be vigilant. If your father is planning something, we need to be prepared." He took the phone from her and quickly typed out a response. "I'll try to get some information. See if anyone's talking." As they waited for a response, the tension in the room grew. The storm outside seemed to be intensifying, and Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that they were in for a wild ride. The darkness outside seemed to be seeping into their home, threatening to disrupt the peace they had worked so hard to build. Suddenly, Ender stirred in his crib, his cries piercing the night air. Ashley quickly got up to tend to him, Avan following close behind. As they soothed Ender back to sleep, Ashley couldn't help but wonder what the future held. Was her father's threat just an empty one, or was there something more sinister at play? As they settled back into the couch, Avan's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his expression serious. "It's my brother, Kael. He's a detective. He's on his way over. He heard from a source that Malcolm's been making some moves, and he thinks it's connected to you and Ender." Ashley's eyes widened as she processed the information. It seemed the storm was indeed closing in, and they were right in the middle of it. She felt Avan's arm wrap around her, pulling her close. "We'll get through this, together," he whispered, his voice a reassuring presence in the darkness. But as they sat there, waiting for Kael's arrival, Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that they were standing at the edge of a precipice, staring into an unknown abyss. And she wondered, would they be able to take the leap of faith and land safely, or would they plunge into the depths of chaos and uncertainty?
