Shadows in the Spotlight

Part 3

The figure in the crowd seemed to be frozen in place, their eyes locked onto Rumi with an unnerving intensity. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she tried to process what was happening. Zoey's hand on her arm was the only thing that kept her grounded. "Hey, what's wrong?" Zoey asked, her voice low and concerned. Rumi's eyes never left the figure. "That guy," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the music. "The one with the green eyes. I think he's watching us." Zoey followed her gaze, her expression skeptical. "I don't see anyone," she said, her voice rising above the music. But Rumi knew what she saw. And she was certain that Mira had seen him too. She turned to find her friend, but Mira was nowhere to be found. "Mira?" Rumi called out, her voice scanning the crowd. Zoey's grip on her arm tightened. "Let's get out of here," she said, her voice firm. "This is starting to freak me out." But Rumi was transfixed. She was determined to know more about the mysterious figure and what he wanted. She pulled free from Zoey's grasp and took a step forward, her eyes locked onto the figure. That's when she saw him move. He slipped through the crowd with ease, his eyes never leaving hers. Rumi's heart was racing as she took another step forward, her senses on high alert. Suddenly, the music and laughter around her seemed to fade away, and all she could hear was the sound of her own heartbeat. She was aware of Zoey's presence beside her, but it was as if she was in a tunnel, with only one exit. The figure was getting closer, his eyes burning with an intensity that made her skin prickle. Rumi's breath caught in her throat as he reached out a hand, his fingers brushing against her arm. "Rumi," a voice whispered in her ear, sending shivers down her spine. "We need to talk." She spun around, but there was no one there. The voice seemed to come from all around her, echoing off the walls. She turned back to Zoey, her eyes wide with fear. "What was that?" Zoey asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Rumi shook her head, her mind reeling. "I don't know," she said, her voice trembling. "But I think we're in trouble."
