Racing Against Time
Part 40
As Ashley and Jackson burst through the hospital doors, they were immediately enveloped in a flurry of activity. Nurses and doctors rushed past them, their faces etched with concern, as they tried to tend to the steady stream of patients pouring in. Ashley's eyes scanned the chaotic scene, her heart still racing from their escape. She spotted a triage nurse standing at the reception desk, and made a beeline for her. "Please, I need help," Ashley said, her voice shaking as she approached the nurse. "My son and I, we've been... we've been hurt." The nurse's expression softened as she took in Ashley's battered appearance, and she quickly ushered them towards a nearby examination room. "Don't worry, we'll get you both sorted out," she said reassuringly. Within minutes, a doctor had Ashley on the examination table, gently probing her face and taking X-rays. The diagnosis was swift and grim: Ashley had a broken cheekbone, and would need surgery to repair it. But as the doctor began to explain the extent of her injuries, Ashley's mind was already racing ahead. She was worried about Jackson, and whether he was okay. "What about my baby?" she asked, her voice laced with anxiety. The doctor smiled and nodded. "Don't worry, we're going to take a look at him right now. Let's get him checked out." A nurse came in and gently took Jackson from Ashley's arms, leading him to a nearby examination room. Ashley watched anxiously as the nurse cooed and soothed Jackson, trying to distract him from the unfamiliar surroundings. Within minutes, the nurse returned with Jackson in tow, a clean bill of health in hand. "He's okay," she said reassuringly. "Just a bit shaken up, but he's going to be fine." Ashley's eyes welled up with tears of relief as she wrapped her arms around Jackson, holding him close. For a moment, they just sat there, holding each other tightly, grateful to be safe. But as they sat there, Ashley knew that their ordeal was far from over. They still had to deal with the aftermath of their captivity, and the perpetrator was still out there. Ashley's heart hardened with determination as she thought about what she would do next. The doctor came back into the room, a concerned expression on his face. "We'll need to get you into surgery to repair that cheekbone," he said gently. "But first, I need to ask you some questions. Can you tell me what happened to you and your son?" Ashley took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. She knew that she would have to relive the nightmare all over again, but she was determined to see justice served. "I'll tell you everything," she said, her voice firm. "But first, can I have a police officer with me? I want to make sure that whoever did this to us is caught."
