A Fragile Step Forward

Part 6

Nurse Thompson walked back into Ashley's room, a tray of food in her hands and a small cup of medication on the side. Ashley's stomach growled at the sight of the food, and she sat up in bed, her eyes fixed on the tray. But before Nurse Thompson could even set the tray down, disaster struck. The tray slipped from her hands, and the food and medication went flying onto the floor. Ashley's heart sank as she watched the mess unfold. "Oh no, I'm so sorry," Nurse Thompson exclaimed, bending down to pick up the scattered items. Ashley felt a pang of sympathy for the nurse. "It's okay, accidents happen," she said quietly. Nurse Thompson looked up, relief in her eyes. "Thank you, Ashley. That means a lot to me." She quickly cleaned up the mess and brought in a new tray of food. Ashley slowly began to eat, savoring each bite of the bland hospital food. As she ate, Nurse Thompson stood by her bedside, a chart in her hand. "I've been talking to Dr. Lee, and we've decided that in a few days, you'll be starting electroconvulsive therapy," she said, her voice matter-of-fact. Ashley's eyes narrowed, and she felt a surge of skepticism. "ECT?" she repeated, her voice laced with doubt. "You mean electroshock therapy?" Nurse Thompson nodded. "That's right. It's a common treatment for patients with severe depression, and we think it could really help you." Ashley raised an eyebrow. "I don't know...I've heard some pretty scary stories about ECT." She pushed the food around her plate, her appetite suddenly gone. Nurse Thompson's expression was calm. "I understand your concerns, but it's a safe and effective treatment. And we'll be monitoring you closely throughout the process." Just then, Ashley felt a sudden urgency. "Nurse Thompson, I need to go to the bathroom," she said, her voice rising. Nurse Thompson quickly set down the chart and helped Ashley out of bed. "Let's get you cleaned up, and then I'll take you to the bathroom," she said, supporting Ashley's elbow as they walked. As they made their way to the bathroom, Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that ECT was somehow being forced upon her. She wasn't sure if she was ready for it, and she definitely wasn't sure if it was going to work. But for now, she just needed to focus on getting through the day.
