"A New Reality"

Part 9

A few days had passed since Ashley's world had been turned upside down, and she had finally mustered up the strength to seek help. She walked into the information office, her eyes scanning the room for a friendly face. The staff member behind the counter looked up and smiled sympathetically as Ashley approached. "Hi, how can I help you?" the woman asked, her voice warm and kind. Ashley took a deep breath and explained her situation, trying to hold back tears as she recounted the events of the past few days. The staff member listened attentively, nodding along as Ashley spoke. "I'm so sorry to hear that," the woman said when Ashley finished. "Let me see what I can do to help you. We have a few different options for emergency housing. Let me just check what's available." The staff member tapped away on her computer, her brow furrowed in concentration. After a few moments, she looked up with a mixture of apology and concern on her face. "I'm afraid our options are a bit limited at the moment," she said. "We have a few small one-bedroom apartments available, but they're not in the best condition. They're a bit mouldy and could use some repairs, but they're better than being on the streets." Ashley's heart sank as she thought about the prospect of living in a mouldy apartment, but she didn't have a choice. She was pregnant and homeless, and she needed a place to stay. "What do you mean by mouldy?" Ashley asked, trying to prepare herself for the worst. The staff member hesitated before answering. "Well, they've had some issues with dampness in the past, and it's caused some mould to grow in the walls and ceilings. We're working to get them fixed up, but it's going to take some time." Ashley nodded, trying to process the information. She didn't have a lot of options, and she knew she had to take what she could get. "I'll take it," she said finally, trying to sound brave. The staff member nodded and handed Ashley a piece of paper with the address of the apartment and the details of her new home. Ashley took it, feeling a mix of emotions as she read through the information. As she left the office, Ashley couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment and frustration. She had been hoping for a better solution, but it seemed like this was all she was going to get. She took a deep breath and tried to focus on the positive - she had a roof over her head, and she could start to rebuild her life. The apartment was on the other side of town, and Ashley made her way there, her heart heavy with worry. What would the apartment be like? Would it be safe for her and her baby? She pushed the thoughts aside and focused on putting one foot in front of the other. As she walked, Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that her life was spiraling out of control. She was pregnant, homeless, and now she was going to be living in a mouldy apartment. It was a lot to take in, and Ashley wasn't sure how she was going to cope. But for now, she just kept moving forward, one step at a time.
