"Into the Heart of Darkness"
Part 11
As I stood before Mari, I knew that I had to tread carefully, to remind her of the person she once was, and the bond we shared. I took a deep breath, and began to speak, my voice gentle, persuasive. "Mari, do you remember the days at the academy? The laughter, the adventures, the secrets we shared?" I asked, hoping to spark a glimmer of recognition, of friendship, in her eyes. But Mari just raised an eyebrow, her gaze piercing as she searched me for any hidden motives. "The academy?" she repeated, her voice dripping with disdain. "You mean the place where I was a prisoner, a plaything for the whims of my father and his minions?" I shook my head, trying to convey my regret, my sorrow for what she had endured. "No, Mari, it was more than that. It was a place of learning, of growth. A place where we were free to be ourselves, to make our own choices." Mari snorted, her eyes flashing with anger. "Free? You call that freedom? Being trapped in a world of lies and deception, with no escape from the darkness that lurked within?" I took a step forward, my hands extended in a gesture of peace. "Mari, that's not what I meant. You were different then, you were kind and caring, and...and beautiful." She raised an eyebrow, her gaze narrowing as she searched me for any hidden motives. "Beautiful?" she repeated, her voice low, husky. "You think I'm beautiful?" I nodded, trying to keep my eyes locked on hers. "You were, you are. I remember the way you used to smile, the way your eyes sparkled with mischief." Mari's gaze softened, just for a moment, and I saw a glimmer of the girl I once knew, the girl who had laughed with me, and loved with me. But it was quickly extinguished, replaced by a cold, hard light that made my heart skip a beat. "You don't know me," she spat, her voice venomous. "You don't know what I'm capable of." I shook my head, trying to convey my understanding, my empathy. "I may not know you now, but I knew you before. I remember the way you used to make me laugh, the way you used to smile at me." Mari's gaze narrowed, her eyes flashing with anger. But then, something strange happened. She looked at me, really looked at me, and for a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of recognition, of curiosity. And then, her gaze dropped, and she inspected me, her eyes roaming over my body. I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as she looked at me, her gaze lingering on my skin. It was as if she had forgotten that I was standing there, forgotten that I was a person, and not just a thing to be used and discarded. But as she looked at me, I saw something in her eyes, something that gave me hope. A spark of attraction, of interest, that seemed to burn within her, like a flame. And then, just as quickly, it was extinguished. The door to the room burst open, and the demon lord strode in, his eyes gleaming with power. "Mari, my dear," he said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "I see you've met our new...guest." Mari's gaze flickered to him, and then back to me. She smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "Yes, father. I was just...getting acquainted with him." The demon lord's eyes narrowed as he looked at me, and I knew that I was in grave danger. But then, Mari spoke up, her voice smooth, silky. "This one," she said, her eyes glinting with amusement. "He's my new pleasure slave. I purchased him myself, and I find him...amusing." I felt a surge of relief, mixed with fear. She was covering for me, protecting me from the demon lord's wrath. But at what cost? The demon lord's eyes gleamed with interest as he looked at me, and I knew that I was in grave danger. But Mari's gaze met mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of apology, of regret. And I knew that I had to trust her, to trust that she would find a way to help me, to save me from this darkness. But for now, I was at her mercy, and the demon lord's. And I knew that I had to tread carefully, to avoid triggering any further changes in her.
