Part 8

Dorothy felt like she was in a daze as she processed the news. She was pregnant? The words echoed in her mind, refusing to sink in. She looked at Dr. Thompson, searching for some kind of confirmation or denial, but the doctor's expression remained neutral. "Let me just confirm a few things," Dr. Thompson said, reviewing Dorothy's chart. "You're about... twelve weeks along, I think. We'll need to run some more tests to confirm the due date, but it looks like you're having a healthy pregnancy so far." Dorothy's mind reeled as she tried to wrap her head around the news. Twelve weeks? That meant she was already a quarter of the way through her pregnancy. She thought back to her symptoms, realizing that they had been going on for a few weeks now. The fatigue, the queasy feeling, the aches and pains – they all made sense now. Dr. Thompson smiled and patted Dorothy's hand. "Don't worry, we'll take good care of you. I'll prescribe you some prenatal vitamins and schedule some follow-up appointments. You'll be seeing me every few weeks from now on." Dorothy nodded, still trying to process the news. She felt like she was in a dream, like this couldn't be happening to her. She was 55 years old, for crying out loud! She was done with this phase of her life. Or so she thought. As she left the doctor's office, Dorothy felt like she was walking on air. She couldn't believe it – she was going to be a mother. The thought sent a mix of emotions through her – excitement, fear, uncertainty. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure – her life was about to change in ways she never could have imagined. Dorothy walked out of the office building and into the bright Miami sunlight. She took a deep breath, feeling the warm air fill her lungs. She needed to call Lucas and tell him the news. This was something they needed to face together. As she walked to her car, Dorothy's mind was racing with thoughts of Lucas and how he would react. Would he be excited? Would he be scared? She knew he would be supportive, but she also knew that this news would come as a shock to him. Dorothy got into her car and started the engine. As she pulled out of the parking lot, she reached for her phone and dialed Lucas's number. Her heart was racing with anticipation as she waited for him to answer. "Hey, sweetheart," Lucas's voice said on the other end of the line. "What's up?" Dorothy took a deep breath and blurted out the news. "I'm pregnant," she said, her voice shaking slightly. There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Dorothy wondered if Lucas had hung up on her. But then he spoke, his voice filled with excitement and surprise. "Pregnant? You're pregnant? Oh my god, Dorothy! This is amazing!" Dorothy couldn't help but laugh at Lucas's reaction. She knew he would be supportive, but she hadn't expected him to be so excited. "I know, right?" she said, smiling. "I'm still trying to wrap my head around it." Lucas chuckled. "Me too, sweetheart. Me too. I'll be right home to talk about this in person." Dorothy smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She was in this with Lucas, and together, they would face whatever came next.
