Chapter 23: Uncertain Future
Part 22
As the hospital door swung open, Ashley stood nervously, her eyes scanning the waiting area for her mom. It had been three weeks since her ultrasound, and she was now 15 weeks pregnant. The reality of her situation was starting to sink in, and with it, a wave of fear washed over her. She was only 17, and the thought of being a mother was daunting. Nicole spotted Ashley and rushed over, a concerned look etched on her face. "Hey, kiddo, I'm so glad to see you," she said, enveloping Ashley in a warm hug. "How are you feeling today?" Ashley shrugged, feeling a mix of emotions. "I'm okay, I guess. Just a little scared." Nicole's expression turned serious. "I know, sweetie. This is a lot to take in. But I'm here for you, and we'll get through this together." As they made their way to the car, Ashley couldn't help but think about Axel. Did he know about the baby? She hadn't spoken to him since her ultrasound, and she wasn't sure if she was ready to face him. Nicole seemed to sense Ashley's unease. "Ashley, we need to talk about your relapse prevention plan," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "Your therapist gave you a crisis plan to follow if you felt the urge to use again. Do you have it with you?" Ashley nodded, rummaging through her bag for the piece of paper. "Yeah, I have it right here." Nicole took the paper from Ashley and scanned it quickly. "Okay, good. This is a great plan. We need to make sure you stick to it, okay?" Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She was going to do this. She was going to be a good mom, and she was going to stay sober. As they drove away from the rehab center, Nicole's mind wandered to Axel. Did he know about the baby? And what if Ashley went back to him? What if she relapsed? Nicole's eyes met Ashley's in the rearview mirror, and she could see the fear and uncertainty there. She knew she had to be strong for Ashley, for the baby. She was going to do everything in her power to support Ashley and help her through this difficult time. "I want you to stay with me for a while, okay?" Nicole said, her voice firm. "We can work on getting you settled into a routine, and I can help you with the baby when it comes." Ashley nodded, looking relieved. "Okay, Mom. That sounds good." As they drove away from the rehab center, Ashley felt a sense of uncertainty about her future. But with her mom by her side, she felt a sense of hope that she could get through this, no matter what came next.
