Chapter 20: A Desperate Search
Part 19
A Desperate Search Tomorrow, she would pick up the pieces of her shattered life, but for now, Ashley just walked. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she navigated the unfamiliar streets, her heart heavy with the weight of Gerald's words. She had nowhere to go, no money, and no home. The thought of being alone and pregnant was daunting, and she couldn't shake the feeling of desperation that had settled in her chest. As she walked, Ashley noticed the curious glances from passersby, but she didn't care. She felt like she was in a daze, her mind numb from the shock of Gerald's decision. She had thought they were working through their issues, but now she realized she had been blind to the reality of their relationship. Ashley stopped in front of a small grocery store, staring blankly at the "Help Wanted" sign in the window. Maybe they would hire her, she thought, a spark of hope igniting within her. She took a deep breath and pushed open the door, stepping inside. The store was quiet, with only a few customers browsing the aisles. Ashley approached the checkout counter, where a friendly-looking woman with a warm smile greeted her. "Can I help you?" she asked. Ashley hesitated, unsure of how to begin. "I'm looking for a job," she said finally, trying to sound confident. "I saw the sign in the window." The woman's expression softened. "Let me get my manager," she said, disappearing into the back room. A few minutes later, a harried-looking man with a thick beard and a kind face emerged. "Hi, I'm Mike," he said, extending a hand. "I understand you're looking for a job?" Ashley nodded, feeling a surge of determination. "Yes, I am. I'm available to start immediately." Mike's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at her. "We're a small store, so it's not a lot of hours, but we might be able to use someone part-time," he said. "What's your experience?" Ashley thought back to her previous jobs, trying to remember the details. "I worked at a coffee shop a few years ago," she said. "And I did some administrative work for a small business." Mike nodded, making a note on a piece of paper. "Okay, we'll be in touch tomorrow to set up an interview," he said. "Do you have a phone number where we can reach you?" Ashley hesitated, realizing she didn't have a phone. "I can give you the address of my... um... friend's house," she said, hoping Mike wouldn't think she was crazy. Mike raised an eyebrow but nodded. "That's okay, we'll try to reach you there," he said. As Ashley left the grocery store, she felt a small glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could turn her life around and create a new future for herself and her baby. But for now, she still had nowhere to go, and the thought of spending the night on the streets was daunting. She continued walking, her eyes scanning the sidewalks for a place to rest. As the sun began to set, Ashley spotted a small homeless shelter with a sign that read "Pregnant Women Welcome." She took a deep breath and pushed open the door, stepping inside.
