Chapter 2: The Unexpected Invitation
Part 2
The kitchen was quiet once again, with only the sound of the coffee maker humming in the background. I had just poured myself a fresh cup of coffee when I heard the doorbell ring. I wasn't expecting anyone, and my mind immediately went to the possibility of it being a neighbor or perhaps a delivery. I wiped my hands on a towel and made my way to the front door, peering through the peephole to see who it was. To my surprise, it was Charlie, Nick's boyfriend. He looked a bit flustered, and his eyes darted around the porch before settling on me. I opened the door, and he flashed a quick smile. "Hi, Mrs. Thompson," he said, his voice a bit formal. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I was wondering if I could speak with you for a minute." I ushered him in, curiosity getting the better of me. "Of course, Charlie. What's going on?" He hesitated, his eyes scanning the living room before settling on me. "I hope Nick didn't say anything, but... well, I think it's better if I explain in person." My mind was racing with possibilities. What could Charlie want to talk to me about? Was everything okay with him and Nick? I gestured for him to take a seat, and he sat down on the couch, fidgeting with his hands. "Charlie, please, tell me what's going on," I said, trying to reassure him. He took a deep breath before launching into an explanation. "Nick and I have been thinking about taking a trip, just the two of us. We've been together for a while now, and I think it's time we spend some quality time together, just the two of us." I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "A trip? That's wonderful, Charlie. Where were you thinking of going?" Charlie's face lit up. "We were thinking of visiting my family's place in the mountains. It's a beautiful spot, and I think Nick would love it." I smiled, happy to see Charlie so excited. "That sounds like a great idea. I'm sure Nick would love to spend some time with you." Charlie's expression turned serious, and he leaned forward. "There's just one more thing, Mrs. Thompson. I was wondering if... well, if you would like to come along." My eyes widened in surprise. Me? Go on a trip with Charlie and Nick? I wasn't sure if I was ready for that, but a part of me was tempted. It could be a great opportunity to bond with Charlie and get to know him better. As I hesitated, Charlie's eyes locked onto mine, filled with hope. "What do you say, Mrs. Thompson? Will you join us?" I took a deep breath, weighing my options. It could be a fun adventure, and I would get to spend quality time with my son and his boyfriend. What could possibly go wrong?
