Chapter 17: A New Beginning
Part 17
Ashley smiled and hugged Erica tightly. "I'm so happy for you," she said, smiling more than Erica had seen her in weeks, ever since her diagnosis. "Wow, that's great," she exclaimed, her eyes shining with joy. Erica looked at Ashley, surprised by her reaction. "I thought you'd be upset," she said, her voice laced with concern. "Because of the chemo affecting your fertility and... and I know how bad you want to be a mom." Ashley's expression softened, and she pulled back to look at Erica. "I'm not upset, Erica," she said, her voice filled with emotion. "I'm happy for you, truly. Being a mom is something I've always wanted, and while I'm not giving up on that dream, I'm also not ready to give up on my own chance at motherhood just yet." Erica nodded, understanding in her eyes. "I know," she said. "I'm sorry, Ash. I didn't mean to make you feel..." Ashley cut her off with a gentle smile. "You didn't make me feel anything negative, Erica. I'm just... grateful that I get to be a part of this journey with you. You're going to be an amazing mom, and I get to be Auntie Ash." Erica laughed, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. "You're going to be an amazing aunt," she said, smiling back at Ashley. The two friends hugged again, this time with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the future. As they pulled back, Erica noticed that Ashley's eyes looked a little more vibrant, a little more full of life than they had in weeks. "Ash, your smile... it's so bright," Erica said, her voice filled with wonder. "I feel like I've seen it for the first time in months." Ashley chuckled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Maybe I was just waiting for some good news to share with you," she said, her voice laced with humor. "But seriously, Erica, I'm happy for you. Truly, deeply happy." Erica smiled, feeling grateful for her friend's reaction. She knew that Ashley's response was a testament to their strong bond, and she felt blessed to have Ashley by her side as she navigated this new chapter in her life.
