A Difficult Conversation Ahead

Part 107

Ashley took a few deep breaths as she tried to calm Alex down, eventually managing to coax him back into his room and get him settled into bed. She tucked him in, making sure he was comfortable, and kissed his forehead. "I love you, sweetie," she whispered, trying to reassure him that everything was going to be okay. Once Alex was asleep, Ashley made her way back to the living room, where Avan was waiting for her. He was sitting on the couch, looking concerned, and Ashley could tell that he was still trying to process what had just happened. "Hey," Avan said softly, as Ashley sat down beside him. "I'm sorry about Alex. I didn't mean to upset him." Ashley shook her head. "It's not your fault," she said. "These conversations are never easy. But we need to talk about this, don't we?" Avan nodded, taking her hand in his. "We do. I know you're still thinking about getting an abortion, and I want you to know that I'm not giving up on this. I want us to have this baby, Ashley. I really do." Ashley looked at him, feeling a pang of sadness. "Avan, I understand why you feel that way, but we have to think about what's best for our family. We're already struggling to make ends meet, and another child would just add to the stress. I know it's not what you want to hear, but I think it's the responsible thing to do." Avan squeezed her hand. "I understand where you're coming from, but I think we're looking at this from the wrong perspective. We're not just thinking about the financial implications; we're thinking about the emotional toll it would take on us, on our family. But what about the emotional toll of not having this baby? What about the what-ifs?" Ashley sighed, feeling a lump form in her throat. She knew Avan was right; she had been so focused on the practicalities that she hadn't considered the emotional implications of not having the baby. "I don't know, Avan," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just feel so overwhelmed. I don't know if I can do this." Avan pulled her into a hug. "You don't have to do it alone," he whispered. "We'll face this together, okay?"
