Chapter 1: The Unwanted Detour
Part 1
Liliana 'Lily' Hartley stepped off the bus and onto the manicured grounds of New Horizons Camp, the eerie feeling of being watched settling in the pit of her stomach. Her brunette hair was tied back in a neat ponytail, and her bright green eyes scanned the surroundings with a mix of anxiety and apprehension. She had been sent here by her parents, who were worried about her 'lifestyle choices'. Lily had been caught exchanging flirtatious texts with her best friend, Emily, and her parents had deemed it necessary for her to attend this... 'therapy camp'. As she made her way towards the imposing structure of the camp's main building, Lily couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. She had heard whispers about New Horizons, rumors of its... unorthodox methods. The words 'gay conversion camp' echoed in her mind, and she felt a surge of defiance. She wasn't gay, or at least, she wasn't sure. All she knew was that she had feelings for Emily, and that her parents didn't understand. The building loomed before her, its pristine facade seeming to mock her with its perfection. Lily took a deep breath and pushed open the door, stepping into a world that promised to change her. Inside, a bubbly counselor greeted her with a warm smile. "Welcome, sweetie! I'm Jen. We're so glad you're here. Let's get you checked in and settled." Lily forced a smile, her eyes scanning the room for any signs of... like-minded individuals. That's when she saw her – a girl with a messy blonde ponytail and big brown eyes, fidgeting with a tissue in her hand. She looked like she was about to cry. The girl was dressed in a cheerleading uniform, complete with a bright pink sweater and a pleated skirt. A 'Spirit Stick' lay across her lap, and a name tag that read 'Megan' hung around her neck. Jen led Lily over to the girl, who looked up with a mixture of fear and curiosity. "This is Megan, one of our... ah... newer residents," Jen said, her voice dripping with forced cheerfulness. "And this is Liliana, our newest addition. Girls, why don't you take some time to get to know each other?" Megan's eyes met Lily's, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. Megan looked... lost, and Lily felt a pang of recognition. Maybe, just maybe, she wasn't alone here after all. "Hi," Megan said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm Megan. I... I'm a cheerleader." She glanced down at her uniform, her cheeks flushing pink. Lily smiled, feeling a spark of connection with this... sweet, sort of shy girl. "I'm Liliana, but everyone calls me Lily. Nice to meet you, Megan." As they shook hands, Lily couldn't help but wonder what secrets Megan might be hiding, and what lay behind those big brown eyes. And maybe, just maybe, they could find a way to escape this place together.
