Shifting Symptoms
Part 4
The next morning, Rachel and Eric began their rounds, eager to assess the progress of their patients. They started with Jake, the 16-year-old who had been experiencing hallucinations and excessive drooling. As they entered his isolation room, they found him sitting up in bed, looking more alert than he had the day before. However, when he tried to stand up, he stumbled and had difficulty walking. "Rachel, Eric, I don't know what's going on," Jake said, looking concerned. "My legs feel like jelly. I don't know how to walk." Rachel and Eric exchanged a worried glance. This was a new symptom, one that they hadn't seen before. They quickly assessed Jake's neurological function and determined that his motor skills were impaired. "We need to run some tests to figure out what's going on," Rachel said, making a note on Jake's chart. "In the meantime, let's get you some physical therapy to help you regain your strength and coordination." Next, they visited Ethan, the eight-month-old baby who had been struggling to breathe on his own. As they entered his isolation room, they were surprised to see that he was sitting up in his crib, looking much more alert than he had the day before. "Isn't that great?" Ethan's mother exclaimed. "He's breathing on his own again!" Rachel and Eric were relieved, but their joy was short-lived. As they began to examine Ethan, they noticed that he was reacting strongly to even the slightest touch. "Ouch! Be careful," his mother cried out, as Rachel accidentally brushed against Ethan's arm. "He's so sensitive to touch all of a sudden." Rachel and Eric exchanged a concerned glance. This was another new symptom, one that they hadn't seen before. They quickly assessed Ethan's sensory function and determined that he was experiencing extreme touch sensitivity. "We need to be careful when handling him," Rachel said, making a note on Ethan's chart. "Let's try to minimize his exposure to stimuli and see if we can find a way to alleviate this sensitivity." Finally, they visited Alex, the 35-year-old patient who had been experiencing a range of symptoms. As they entered his isolation room, they were greeted by the sound of noisy breathing. "Rachel, Eric, I think I'm getting worse," Alex said, looking worried. "My breathing is getting harder, and my stomach is killing me." Rachel and Eric quickly assessed Alex's condition and determined that he was experiencing abdominal pain and respiratory distress. "We need to run some tests to figure out what's going on," Rachel said, making a note on Alex's chart. "In the meantime, let's get you some oxygen and pain medication to help manage your symptoms." As they finished their rounds, Rachel and Eric couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The Nova Virus was behaving in ways they had never seen before, and it was up to them to stay one step ahead. They knew that they had to work together as a team to find a cure, but they also knew that it wouldn't be easy. The virus was a formidable foe, and it was going to take all their skills and expertise to defeat it.
