Fears and Doubts

Part 23

"Ashan," a soft voice whispered in her ear, but Ashley's mind was a jumbled mess of thoughts and emotions, and she couldn't quite focus on the words. She tried to open her eyes, but they felt heavy, weighed down by some unseen force. She struggled to sit up, but her body felt weak and unresponsive. The doctor and nurse were moving around her, their faces intent and focused, but Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that they were hiding something from her. She tried to speak, but her voice was hoarse and barely audible. "What's...what's wrong?" she stammered. The doctor placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, his expression sympathetic. "Ashley, you're experiencing some complications. We need to run some more tests to determine the cause." Ashley's eyes scanned the room, searching for Avan, but he was nowhere to be seen. Panic set in, her heart racing with fear. "Where's Avan?" she cried, her voice shaking with desperation. "I need him." The nurse moved to her side, a soothing smile on her face. "He'll be back soon, I promise. He's just...uh...stepping out for a moment." But Ashley wasn't convinced. She knew that Avan wouldn't leave her side, not unless something was terribly wrong. And something was wrong, she could feel it. The pain was getting worse, and she could sense a darkness gathering around her, a sense of foreboding that she couldn't shake. The doctor's expression was grim, and Ashley's heart sank. "What's happening?" she demanded, her voice rising in panic. "Tell me the truth." The doctor hesitated, glancing at the nurse before turning back to Ashley. "We're doing everything we can, Ashley. But...there are some complications. Complications that we need to address." Ashley's mind was reeling. Complications? What kind of complications? And where was Avan? She tried to sit up again, but her body felt like lead, and she collapsed back onto the bed, defeated. "Avan," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I need Avan. Please, find him." The nurse moved to the other side of the bed, her expression sympathetic. "We'll find him, Ashley. I promise. But first, we need to focus on getting you better." But Ashley was beyond consolation. She was trapped in a nightmare, and she couldn't wake up. The pain was suffocating her, and she felt like she was drowning in a sea of fear and uncertainty. "Avan," she cried out again, her voice echoing off the walls of the hospital room. "Where is he? What's happening?"
