Chapter 1: Fractured Family
Part 1
Ashley Frangipane stepped out of her small apartment and onto the sun-kissed streets of Los Angeles, her eyes scanning the bustling neighborhood as she clipped on Franklin's leash. Her 70-pound Labrador Pitbull mix wagged his tail excitedly, and Ashley couldn't help but smile despite the anxiety that had been building up inside her. She took a deep breath, feeling the warm California air fill her lungs, a stark contrast to the chilly New Jersey mornings she grew up with. It had been ten years since Ashley left her hometown, eager to chase her dreams in the city of angels. At 20, she was determined to make it big, but life had other plans. She met Alev, a charismatic and confident man who swept her off her feet. They had a whirlwind romance, and before she knew it, she was pregnant. Ender was born, and Ashley's world changed forever. Alev, however, was not ready for fatherhood. His selfish nature and short temper became more apparent as Ender grew, and he eventually walked out on them, leaving Ashley to care for their son alone. The pain of his departure still lingered, but Ashley was determined to provide a better life for Ender. Now, at 30, Ashley was facing a new challenge. Alev had taken her to court for custody of Ender, claiming he was a changed man and wanted to be a part of his son's life. Ashley knew it was a ploy, but the thought of losing her child was unbearable. She glanced down at Franklin, who was now pulling on his leash, and smiled wryly. If only it was that simple – just clip on a leash and walk away from her problems. As they strolled through the neighborhood, Ashley's mind wandered to Ender, who was currently at therapy, working on his communication skills. At three years old, he had a limited vocabulary, and his sensory issues often left him overwhelmed. Ashley's heart ached as she thought about her little boy, who couldn't even express his needs, let alone his feelings. Franklin, sensing Ashley's tension, nudged her hand with his snout, and she absently scratched behind his ears. She knew she had to stay strong for Ender's sake, but the thought of facing Alev in court made her stomach twist with anxiety. What if the judge didn't believe her? What if Alev's charm and charisma won over? Ashley's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her phone buzzing in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a text from Ender's therapist, reminding her of their upcoming appointment. Ashley's eyes welled up with tears as she thought about the struggles they faced every day, but she pushed on, determination burning within her. She would do whatever it took to protect Ender and keep her family intact. As they turned the corner, Ashley caught sight of the small apartment complex she called home. It wasn't the fanciest place, but it was theirs, and she was grateful for the sense of security it provided. For now, it was home, and Ashley would fight to keep it that way.
