Settling into a New Routine
Part 4
A few weeks had passed since Ashley started her new job as a customer service representative, and she was surprised at how easily she had settled into the role. The days flew by in a blur of helping customers, answering queries, and resolving issues. She had even started to enjoy the challenges that came with the job, and her confidence had grown significantly. As she went about her daily routine, Ashley felt a sense of accomplishment wash over her. She had finally been able to afford a proper grocery shop, and her fridge was stocked with fresh produce and healthy meals. She had even treated herself to a few luxuries, like a new set of kitchen utensils and a cozy throw blanket. But despite her newfound stability, Ashley couldn't shake off the feeling of what could have been. She often found herself thinking about what her life would be like if she didn't have Theo. She would probably be in school, studying for exams and enjoying the carefree days of her youth. The thought made her sigh, and she pushed it aside, focusing on the present. As she got Theo ready for the day, Ashley noticed that he was coughing. At first, she thought it was just a minor cold, but as the coughing persisted, she began to worry. She checked his temperature and her heart sank when she saw that it was 105 degrees. Theo was usually a robust child, but this was a high fever, and she knew she had to take action. Ashley quickly called in to work, hoping that Emily or someone else would answer. When Mrs. Patel picked up, Ashley explained the situation and apologized for calling in sick. But to her surprise, Mrs. Patel sounded annoyed. "Ashley, this is short notice," Mrs. Patel said. "We have a lot of customers coming in today, and we need all hands on deck. Can't you find someone to watch Theo for a few hours?" Ashley felt a surge of frustration. Didn't Mrs. Patel understand that her child was seriously ill? "I'm sorry, but I need to take care of Theo. He's running a high fever, and I need to get him to the doctor." There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Ashley wondered if Mrs. Patel was going to be understanding. But when she finally spoke, her tone was softer. "Okay, Ashley. Take care of Theo. We'll manage without you today. But please try to catch up on any missed work as soon as you can." Ashley felt a wave of relief wash over her. She hung up the phone and turned her attention to Theo, who was now lying on the couch, looking pale and clammy. She knew she had to get him to the doctor, and fast. She quickly grabbed her bag and called a taxi, hoping that they could get to the doctor's office before the fever got any worse.
