The Wall of Ice

Part 1

I stood at the edge of the battlements, the biting wind whipping my hair into a frenzy as I gazed out at the frozen wasteland beyond the Wall. The snow crunched beneath my boots, a familiar sound that I'd grown accustomed to over the years. My name is Jon Snow, or at least, that's what I've been told. The truth is, I've always felt like an imposter, a stranger in a land that's never quite felt like home. But the North has become my home, and I've grown to love it with a ferocity that I never thought possible. As a member of the Night's Watch, I'd seen my fair share of cold and darkness, but there was something about this place that drew me in. Maybe it was the sense of duty, or maybe it was the thrill of adventure that came with every dawn. Whatever the reason, I knew I'd never leave. I felt a presence behind me and turned to see one of my brothers, Samwell Tarly, emerging from the doorway. His cheeks were rosy from the cold, and his eyes sparkled with a warmth that I'd grown to rely on. "Jon, I've got some news," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Maester Aemon has received a raven from the south. It's from the king, and it's not good." I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. The king's business was rarely good, especially when it came to the North. "What does it say?" I asked, my curiosity piqued. Sam hesitated, glancing around nervously before pulling out a small piece of parchment from his cloak. "It's a summons," he said, his voice low. "The king wants you to come to King's Landing. He needs to speak with you in person." I felt a shiver run down my spine. I'd never been to King's Landing, but I'd heard stories about its decadence and corruption. I wasn't sure I wanted to go, but a summons from the king was not something you could ignore. "When do I leave?" I asked, already knowing the answer. Sam looked somber. "As soon as possible. The king's messenger is waiting in the courtyard. He has a small contingent of guards with him, and he's not pleased that the king's business has been delayed." I nodded, a sense of trepidation settling in the pit of my stomach. I knew that this journey would change me, that it would take me to places I'd rather not go. But I was a member of the Night's Watch, and I had a duty to fulfill. With a deep breath, I turned to face the unknown, the wind whipping my hair into a frenzy as I prepared to leave the only home I'd ever known.
