"Unveiling the Truth"

Part 27

Maya took a deep breath as she walked into the small café where she had agreed to meet Eric. She had been putting off this conversation for too long, and she knew it was time to be honest with him. Eric looked up from his coffee as she sat down across from him, a questioning expression on his face. "Hey, what's going on?" he asked, his eyes scanning her face. Maya took another deep breath before launching into the truth. "Eric, I need to tell you something about myself. Something that I've been keeping hidden from everyone, including my family." Eric's curiosity was piqued, and he leaned in closer. "What is it?" Maya hesitated, unsure of how to begin. "I'm not just an ordinary Shadowhunter, Eric. I'm... different. I have powers that go beyond what any Shadowhunter has." Eric's eyes widened in surprise, but he didn't pull back. "What kind of powers?" Maya smiled wryly. "Let's just say that I have a little bit of Kryptonian, Banshee, and Chaos magic inside me. I'm basically invincible." Eric's eyes went wide, and he sat back in his chair, looking stunned. "Whoa, that's... a lot to take in." Maya nodded, feeling a sense of relief that she was finally being honest with him. "I know. And there's more. As a Banshee, I'm a Harbinger of Death. I can sense impending death and hear the details of a person's demise." Eric's face was pale, but he was still looking at her with interest, not fear. "Okay, I think I need a minute to process all of this." Maya laughed. "I understand. It's a lot to take in." Eric took a deep breath and then asked, "Why did your family seem so okay with us being in a relationship? I mean, I'm your student, and you're... well, you're basically a superhero." Maya smiled, feeling a sense of affection for Eric. "That's exactly why they were okay with it. You see, my family knows that I'm not like other Shadowhunters. They know that I have powers that make me almost invincible, and they trust me to take care of myself. They also know that I'm old enough to make my own decisions, and they trust me to choose someone who is good for me." Eric looked thoughtful. "And they think I'm good for you?" Maya nodded. "They do. They see how much you care about me, and they know that you're not just looking at me as your teacher. They trust me to make good choices, and they trust you to be good to me." Eric smiled, looking relieved. "I'm glad to hear that. But I have to ask, why did you keep all of this from me?" Maya's expression turned serious. "I was afraid of losing you, Eric. I was afraid that if you knew the truth about me, you would be scared or think I'm too much to handle. But I realize now that I was wrong to keep it from you. I want to be with you, and I want to be honest with you." Eric reached out and took her hand, his eyes filled with love and acceptance. "I'm glad you told me, Maya. I love you, no matter what you are or what powers you have." Maya's heart swelled with emotion as she smiled at Eric. She knew that she had made the right decision in telling him the truth. She was ready to face whatever came next, as long as Eric was by her side.
