"A Glimmer of Doubt"
Part 61
"Dabi, why?" I asked, my voice cracking as tears began to stream down my face. I gazed up at him, searching for answers, searching for a glimmer of hope. "Why are you doing this? Why are you letting them do this?" Dabi's expression faltered, and he looked away, his eyes drifting towards the floor. For a moment, he seemed to be struggling with something, his jaw clenched in a mixture of frustration and guilt. But then, his mask slipped back into place, and he regarded me with a cold, detached expression. "I'm doing what needs to be done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "Just like you, I'm a part of this world, and I have my role to play." I shook my head, tears flowing freely now. "No, Dabi, that's not true," I said, my voice shaking. "You're not like them. I saw something in your eyes, something that made me think you might be different." Toga's smile grew wider, and she leaned in closer to me. "Oh, Dabi's definitely different," she said, her voice dripping with amusement. "He's our dear, sensitive Dabi, always so concerned with the well-being of others." Tomura chuckled, a cold, mirthless sound. "Yes, Dabi's always been a bit of a softie," he said, his eyes glinting with amusement. "But don't worry, he's still a part of our little family, and he'll do what's best for us." I looked at Dabi, pleading with him to see reason, to see the good in me. "Dabi, please," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "You have to help me. You have to make this stop." Dabi's eyes flickered, and for a moment, I thought I saw something there, something that made me think he might actually listen. But then, he looked away, and I was left with nothing but uncertainty and fear. The room fell silent, the only sound the quiet hum of the fluorescent lights overhead. I waited, my heart pounding in my chest, for Dabi to say something, to do something. But he just stood there, his expression unreadable, his eyes fixed on some point beyond me. And in that silence, I felt a sense of despair wash over me. I was trapped, with no way out, and no one to turn to. Not even Dabi, who had seemed like my only hope.
