"Midnight Crisis"

Part 52

The ambulance sped through the deserted streets, its sirens blaring as it rushed Ashley to the hospital. Ryan held her hand, his face etched with worry, as Ashley clutched her stomach, her body wracked with pain. The memory of the patch of blood on the sheets still lingered in her mind, and she couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that had settled in her stomach. "My baby... is he okay?" Ashley cried out, her voice trembling with fear. "Please, tell me he's okay." She sat up, her eyes wide with panic, as she looked at Ryan. Ryan's face was pale, his eyes filled with concern. "The doctors will take care of you, Ashley. They'll do everything they can to make sure the baby is okay." He squeezed her hand reassuringly. As the ambulance screeched to a halt outside the hospital, the paramedics rushed to lift Ashley onto a stretcher. Ryan followed close behind, his eyes never leaving Ashley's face. Inside the hospital, Ashley was wheeled into a small examination room, where a team of doctors and nurses were waiting. Ryan stood by her side, his hand holding hers, as the lead doctor, a kind-faced woman with a warm smile, approached them. "Okay, Ashley, I'm Dr. Thompson. We're going to take a look at you and see what's going on," she said, her voice gentle. Ashley nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. "My baby... is he okay?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. Dr. Thompson smiled reassuringly. "Let's take a look. Ryan, can you step outside for a minute while we examine Ashley?" Ryan hesitated, but Ashley nodded, her eyes pleading with him to go. "I'll be okay, Ryan. Just go." Ryan nodded and stepped outside, his eyes fixed on the door as he waited anxiously for news. Dr. Thompson turned to Ashley and asked, "Can you tell me more about what's been going on? When did the pain start?" Ashley took a deep breath and explained the events of the past hour, from waking up with a start to the patch of blood on the sheets. Dr. Thompson listened attentively, her expression growing more serious by the minute. As Ashley finished speaking, Dr. Thompson nodded thoughtfully. "Okay, Ashley. I'm going to call in the OB team to take a look at you. We need to run some tests and see what's going on." Ashley nodded, her heart racing with fear. "Is my baby okay?" she asked again, her voice trembling. Dr. Thompson's expression was sympathetic. "We'll do everything we can to make sure your baby is okay, Ashley. But first, we need to take a look at you." With that, Dr. Thompson called in the OB team, and Ashley was wheeled away for further examination. Ryan paced anxiously outside, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Dr. Thompson emerged with a somber expression. "Ryan, you can come in now," she said, her voice gentle. Ryan's heart skipped a beat as he followed Dr. Thompson into the examination room. Ashley was sitting up, her eyes red from crying. "What's going on?" Ryan asked, his voice low and urgent. Dr. Thompson took a deep breath before speaking. "Ashley is experiencing some... complications. But we're going to do everything we can to make sure she and the baby are okay." Ryan's eyes locked onto Ashley's, his heart filled with fear and uncertainty. "Is the baby okay?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Ashley's eyes welled up with tears as she waited for Dr. Thompson's response.
