chapter 1: queen bee blues
Part 1
amelia roberts sauntered through the crowded hallway of harbor high, her designer handbag slung over her shoulder and her vape pen discreetly hidden in her pocket, the familiar hum of the school's fluorescent lights above her only adding to her growing sense of unease. she was the queen bee, after all, and she needed to maintain the image. her long, blonde hair cascaded down her back like a golden waterfall, and her piercing blue eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief as she navigated through the sea of students. it was a typical monday morning at harbor high, and amelia was already dreading it. as she walked into her first-period class, she spotted seth cohen sitting in the back, his messy brown hair sticking out in every direction, his bright blue eyes fixed intently on her, and for a moment, their eyes locked. amelia felt a flutter in her chest, but she quickly pushed it aside. seth was just a friend, a friend who had been secretly pining for her since second grade, but she'd never noticed. she didn't have time for seth's awkwardness, not when she had a social life to maintain and a reputation to uphold. amelia slid into her seat, trying to avoid eye contact with seth, but he was having none of it. "hey, amelia," he said, his voice low and awkward, as he scribbled something on a piece of paper and passed it to her. amelia rolled her eyes good-naturedly and snatched the paper from him, her fingers brushing against his in the process. it was a comic book illustration of spiderman, captioned with a cheesy joke. amelia couldn't help but giggle, and for a moment, she forgot about the stress of being the queen bee. "nice try, seth," she whispered back, tucking the paper into her pocket, her mind already racing with the drama that was unfolding in her life. marissa cooper, her best friend and partner in crime, sauntered in a few minutes late, looking like she'd just rolled out of bed, her eyes red-rimmed from lack of sleep. amelia raised an eyebrow as marissa plopped down in her seat, her eyes fixed on ryan atwood, the brooding newcomer who'd been making waves at harbor high. ryan was the kind of guy who commanded attention without even trying, his piercing green eyes seeming to see right through amelia, making her feel like she was the only person in the room. amelia had noticed him, okay, she'd noticed him a lot, but she wasn't about to admit it to anyone, not even marissa. there was something about ryan that drew her in, something that made her feel like she was drowning in his eyes. "what's going on with you and ryan?" amelia asked, trying to sound nonchalant, as she scribbled some notes on her pad, her hand moving quickly to cover up the shake in her hand. marissa shrugged, her eyes never leaving ryan's face, her voice barely above a whisper. "nothing, i just...i don't know, amelia, he just looks at me like that sometimes, and it feels like he's seeing right through me." amelia raised an eyebrow, sensing drama brewing, her mind already racing with the possibilities. "like what?" marissa sighed, her shoulders sagging, her voice cracking with emotion. "like he knows all my secrets or something. and it freaks me out, because i don't know what he wants from me." amelia's eyes flicked to ryan, who was now engrossed in a conversation with his friend, benjamin, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. she felt a pang of curiosity, and maybe even a little bit of jealousy, but she pushed it aside. she wasn't going to let herself get drawn into ryan's world, not when she had her own problems to deal with. just then, the teacher started droning on, and amelia zoned out, her mind wandering to the party that night, and the drama that was sure to unfold. she was already planning her outfit, a tiny black dress and some killer heels, the music thumping in her head as she imagined herself dancing the night away. but little did she know, her life was about to get a whole lot more complicated. and it had nothing to do with her social calendar. as the class drew to a close, amelia gathered her things, her eyes scanning the room for seth, but he was already gone, disappeared into the crowd of students. she felt a pang of disappointment, but she pushed it aside. she had more important things to worry about, like the party that night, and the drama that was sure to unfold. the hallway was chaotic, students rushing to their next class, the sound of lockers slamming and people shouting filling the air. amelia navigated through the crowd, her eyes scanning the room for a glimpse of ryan, but he was nowhere to be seen. she felt a pang of frustration, but she pushed it aside. she wasn't going to let herself get drawn into ryan's world, not when she had her own problems to deal with. as she turned a corner, she collided with someone, her books spilling out onto the floor. "oh, sorry," she said, as she bent down to pick up her things, her eyes meeting ryan's as he knelt down beside her. "no worries," he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled, his voice low and smooth. "i'm used to it." amelia felt a flutter in her chest, but she quickly pushed it aside. she wasn't going to let herself get drawn into ryan's world, not when she had her own problems to deal with. but as she stood up, her eyes meeting ryan's, she couldn't help but feel like she was in trouble. big trouble.
