**Chapter 10: Down the Rabbit Hole**
Part 10
As the car wound its way down the deserted highway, the GPS announced their arrival at their destination: a small, secluded resort nestled in the heart of the mountains. The trees seemed to close in around them as they pulled into the driveway, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. Maya felt a shiver run down her spine as she gazed out at the imposing structure before them. The resort's facade was a mix of rustic charm and modern luxury, with stone walls and large windows that seemed to reflect the fading light of day. "Welcome to Raven's Peak," Eric said, his voice low and husky as he pulled into the parking lot. "This is where we'll be staying for a while." Maya's eyes widened as she took in the sprawling mansion-like structure. "A while?" she repeated, her voice laced with a hint of unease. Eric's eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled. "Don't worry, I'll explain everything soon," he said, his voice reassuring. "But for now, let's just say that we're going to be here for a little longer than we initially planned." As they stepped out of the car, Maya was struck by the eerie silence that surrounded them. There were no other cars in the parking lot, no people milling about. It was as if they had the entire resort to themselves. The sound of gravel crunching beneath their feet was the only noise that broke the silence as they made their way towards the entrance. Maya felt a sense of trepidation building in her chest as they stepped inside. The lobby was warm and inviting, with a roaring fire crackling in the hearth. But despite the cozy atmosphere, Maya couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. A soft-spoken woman with a kind smile greeted them from behind the reception desk. "Welcome to Raven's Peak, Mr. and Mrs...?" she said, her eyes flicking to Maya. Eric's hand closed around hers, his fingers intertwining with hers in a possessive gesture. "We're Eric and Maya," he said, his voice smooth as silk. "We've got a reservation for...however long we need." The woman's eyes sparkled with amusement as she handed them a key. "You're in room 314," she said. "I hope you enjoy your stay." As they made their way to their room, Maya couldn't help but feel like she was walking into a dream. The corridors were lined with old photographs and antique furniture, and the air was thick with the scent of wood smoke and decay. Their room was a cozy sanctuary, with a plush bed and a roaring fire that seemed to dance in the hearth. Maya felt a sense of exhaustion wash over her as she collapsed onto the bed, her body still humming with the aftershocks of their earlier encounter. Eric sat down beside her, his eyes watching her with a soft, gentle gaze. "You're safe here, Maya," he said, his voice low and reassuring. "I promise you that." Maya's eyes locked onto his, searching for answers. But Eric just smiled and pulled her into his arms, holding her close as the darkness closed in around them. As she drifted off to sleep, Maya couldn't shake the feeling that she was stepping into a whole new world, one that was full of secrets and surprises. And she wasn't sure if she was ready for what lay ahead.
