**Chapter 12: Refuge in the Storm**

Part 12

The warmth of the fire and the comfort of Dakota's body lulled Chris into a deep sleep. He was vaguely aware of Jed's gentle movements below, the creaking of the old cabin, and the distant howling of wolves. But it was all muffled, a distant hum that receded into the background as he burrowed deeper into the blankets, Dakota's warmth seeping into his bones. It was Dakota's shiver that woke him, her body trembling in his arms. Chris opened his eyes to find the loft dimly lit, the fire below burning low. He could see Jed's form, hunched over the hearth, poking at the embers with a stick. "What's wrong?" Chris whispered, his voice husky with sleep. Dakota's eyes fluttered open, and she smiled weakly. "I don't know. I just felt...cold." Chris pulled her closer, his body heat radiating into hers. "You're okay now," he whispered, his lips brushing against her ear. Jed looked up, his eyes twinkling in the dim light. "Storm's coming," he said, his voice low and gravelly. "I've got to get the shutters closed. You two stay here, I'll take care of it." As Jed climbed the ladder to the loft, Chris could see the concern etched on his face. "You're not going outside, are you?" Chris asked, his brow furrowing. Jed nodded. "I've lived here for nigh on 40 years, boy. I know these woods like the back of my hand. I'll be fine." Dakota's eyes locked on Chris's, and he could see the fear lurking there. "We'll be okay, won't we?" she whispered. Chris nodded, his arms tightening around her. "We'll be fine," he said, trying to sound calmer than he felt. As Jed disappeared into the darkness, the wind began to pick up, the trees creaking and swaying outside. The fire below spat and crackled, casting flickering shadows on the walls. Suddenly, a loud crash of thunder boomed outside, making Dakota jump. Chris held her close, his heart racing with anticipation. The storm was closing in, and he could feel the electricity in the air. Jed reappeared, his face set in a determined expression. "Get under the bed," he yelled above the rising wind. "It's the safest place!" But Chris didn't move. He was frozen, his eyes locked on Dakota's, as the storm raged on outside, threatening to consume them all.
