A Moment of Vulnerability
Part 37
Ashley lay in bed, her thoughts wandering as she stared blankly at the ceiling. She was grateful for the reprieve from going to school, but she knew she couldn't stay hidden forever. As she drifted into a daydream, she was interrupted by Karen's gentle voice. "Sweetie, sorry, but I have your bipolar medication here," Karen said, holding out a small cup with a pill and a glass of water. Ashley nodded and sat up, taking the medication from Karen. She swallowed the pill and took a sip of water, feeling a sense of routine and normalcy wash over her. It had been a while since she'd been taking her medication regularly, and she was grateful that Karen was on top of it. As she lay back down, Ashley's thoughts began to wander again. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was a burden to Karen and her family. She had been struggling with her bipolar disorder for a while now, and she knew it wasn't easy for them to deal with her mood swings and episodes. "Karen?" Ashley said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah, sweetie?" Karen replied, sitting down on the bed beside her. "Am I a burden to you?" Ashley asked, her eyes welling up with tears. Karen's expression softened, and she put a gentle hand on Ashley's arm. "Oh, Ashley, no, you are not a burden to me," she said, her voice filled with conviction. "You are a part of our family, and we love you no matter what. We want to help you and support you through the tough times." Ashley looked at Karen, searching for reassurance. She knew that Karen was telling the truth, but it was hard for her to shake off the feeling that she was somehow flawed or broken. "I just feel like I'm so much work," Ashley said, her voice cracking. "I have my episodes, and my mood swings, and I'm just so... much." Karen pulled Ashley into a warm hug. "You are not too much, Ashley," she said. "You are loved, and you are worthy of love and support. We are here for you, and we will get through this together."
