A Conversation Without Expectations

Part 3

Asher settled into the couch, feeling a sense of ease with Karen that he hadn't experienced in a long time. They chatted about everything from their favorite books to their childhood memories, and Asher found himself laughing and joking with her as if they'd known each other for years. Karen was easy to talk to, and Asher appreciated that she didn't seem to be trying to flirt with him or manipulate him in any way. She just seemed to genuinely enjoy his company, and he found himself feeling more and more at ease in her presence. As they talked, Asher learned that Karen was a bit of a geek, with a passion for science fiction and fantasy novels. She was also a talented artist, and she showed him some of her sketches, which were incredibly detailed and lifelike. Asher was impressed by her talent, and he found himself feeling a sense of admiration for her. It was nice to be around someone who didn't see him as just an incubus, but as a person. Just as they were getting into a deep conversation about their favorite authors, Asher's phone rang. He glanced at the screen and saw that it was his sister, Aria. "Hey, sis," he answered, trying to sound casual. "Hey, Ash! I need your help," Aria said, sounding frazzled. "We're running low on groceries, and I was thinking we could go to the store together today. Mom's busy with work, and I don't feel like going alone." Asher glanced at Karen, who was watching him with a sympathetic expression. "Yeah, sure, sis. I can go with you. What did you want to get?" Aria rattled off a list of things they needed, and Asher nodded, even though she couldn't see him. "Okay, got it. I'll meet you at the car in 20 minutes." Karen stood up, smiling. "I think I'll let you go. I don't want to intrude on your family time." Asher walked her to the door, feeling a pang of disappointment that their conversation had been cut short. "Thanks for understanding, Karen. We can catch up again soon?" Karen nodded, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I'd like that, Asher. Maybe next time we can have a conversation that doesn't involve an emergency phone call." Asher grinned, feeling a sense of excitement at the prospect of spending more time with Karen. He watched her walk out the door, feeling a sense of hope that he hadn't felt in a long time. He turned to go back inside, but not before catching a glimpse of Karen's sketchbook lying on the coffee table. He picked it up, flipping through the pages, and was amazed by her talent. He made a mental note to ask her more about her art sometime. With a newfound sense of enthusiasm, Asher headed out to meet his sister, feeling grateful for the unexpected conversation with Karen. It had been a long time since he'd felt like he could just be himself around someone, and he was eager to see where things might go with her.
