A Desperate Morning

Part 6

The sound of her mother's anguished cry pierced through the darkness, jolting Ashley awake. She sprang up from the couch, her heart racing with concern, and rushed to her mother's room. The dim light of the morning revealed her mother's frail form, contorted in pain, with a bucket beside her bed. Ashley's eyes widened as she saw that her mother had thrown up, and her face was slick with sweat. "Ashley...help me," her mother whispered, her voice barely audible. Ashley quickly grabbed a towel and some water, helping her mother clean up and making her comfortable. She adjusted her mother's medication and administered a pain reliever, trying to ease her suffering. As her mother drifted off to sleep, Ashley took a moment to compose herself. She knew she had to get Ender ready for daycare, and then she had to get to work. In the kitchen, Ashley mechanically prepared Ender's breakfast, her mind preoccupied with her mother's condition. She handed him a bowl of cereal, and he chattered excitedly as he ate. Ashley forced a smile, trying to hide her exhaustion. She hadn't eaten in three days, and her body ached with fatigue. Her pale skin and sunken eyes were a testament to her own neglect. As she dropped Ender off at daycare, Ashley felt a pang of guilt for leaving him. She knew he needed his mother, and she needed him. But she had to work to make ends meet. The walk to her job was a blur, her legs heavy with exhaustion. She stumbled into the coffee shop, where she worked part-time, and collapsed onto her feet behind the counter. The day dragged on, each minute ticking by like an eternity. Ashley's mind wandered to her mother, Ender, and the mounting pile of bills. When her shift finally ended, she trudged out of the coffee shop, her legs aching. As she walked back to the daycare to pick up Ender, her phone rang. It was the daycare, informing her that Ender was upset and needed to be picked up early. Ashley's heart sank as she rushed to collect him. Ender's eyes welled up with tears as he saw Ashley, and he flung his arms around her neck. "Mommy, I want the car," he begged, his voice trembling. Ashley's heart ached as she looked at her son, remembering the disappointment she had caused him the day before. She couldn't afford the car, but she felt terrible saying no again. In a moment of weakness, she slipped a small toy car into her purse. As they walked home, Ender chattered excitedly about his day, oblivious to Ashley's exhaustion and worry. When they arrived home, Ashley's mother was waiting for her, her eyes sunken but alert. The doctor had called Ashley earlier that day, his words echoing in her mind: the cancer had spread. Ashley's heart sank as she looked at her mother, feeling the weight of her responsibilities bearing down on her. How would she cope with this new reality? And how would she find a way to give Ender the life he deserved?
