A Mother's Desperate Plea
Part 13
"I... I can't," Ashley stuttered, her voice cracking with emotion. "I love my son, I love him, but my mom... she's dying." Ashley broke down, her body shaking with sobs as she clutched Ender tightly to her leg. Officer Jenkins's expression softened, and she reached out to gently guide Ashley towards the back of the police car. As they walked, Ashley continued to sob, her heart heavy with grief and worry. She felt like she was being torn in two different directions, and she didn't know which way to turn. Officer Jenkins led her to the back of the car and opened the door, gently encouraging Ashley to get in. "Please, Ashley, let's get you and Ender settled in," Officer Jenkins said softly. "We can talk more about this once you're calm and comfortable." Ashley hesitated for a moment, but Officer Jenkins's kind words and gentle manner put her at ease. She slowly got into the back of the car, Ender still clinging to her leg. As she sat down, Ashley felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her. She was emotionally drained, and her body ached with fatigue. Officer Jenkins got into the front seat and started the engine, then turned to look at Ashley through the rearview mirror. "I'm going to get you some help, Ashley," Officer Jenkins said, her voice filled with determination. "We're going to get you and Ender the support you need, and we'll make sure your mom is taken care of too." Ashley looked at Officer Jenkins, her eyes searching for reassurance. As they drove, Ashley's sobs slowly subsided, replaced by a numbness that seemed to spread through her body like a cold mist. She stared out the window, her mind reeling with thoughts of her mom, Ender, and the uncertain future ahead. She felt like she was losing control, like her world was spinning out of orbit. The police car pulled up to a small, unassuming building, and Officer Jenkins turned off the engine. "We're here," she said, getting out of the car and opening the door for Ashley. Ashley hesitated, unsure of what to expect. As she got out of the car, Ashley saw that they were at a small community center. A sign above the door read "Social Services" in bold letters. Ashley's heart sank, and she felt a sense of trepidation wash over her. What did they have planned for her and Ender? Officer Jenkins took Ashley's arm, leading her towards the door. "Don't worry, Ashley," she said softly. "We're going to get you the help you need. Just trust me, okay?" Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of resignation wash over her. She had no other choice but to trust Officer Jenkins and the system. But as they walked into the community center, Ashley couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever.
