Making Connections
Part 3
As I sat with Min-ji's group at lunch, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and nervousness. Min-ji introduced me to her friends one by one, starting with the Japanese boy with the messy mop of hair. "This is Taro Ito," she said with a smile. "His parents own a chain of sushi restaurants." Taro grinned and bowed slightly, his eyes sparkling with friendliness. "Konnichiwa, Alexis. Welcome to our crazy group." Next, Min-ji introduced me to the soft-spoken Indian girl with the book clutched to her chest. "This is Leela Patel," she said. "Her parents run a successful tech startup." Leela smiled shyly and held out her hand for me to shake. "Nice to meet you, Alexis. I'm a bit of a bookworm, but I love learning new things." The ruggedly handsome boy with the curly brown hair was introduced as Julian Styles, whose parents owned a popular music label. As we chatted and laughed together, I started to notice a pattern. Each of their parents had a business partner who was a friend of my parents. I couldn't believe it – it seemed like my parents' business associates' kids were all attending this school. As lunch drew to a close, Min-ji introduced me to the last member of the group. "This is Kaito Yamato," she said, her voice a bit more cautious. "His parents own a large conglomerate with interests in everything from real estate to finance." Kaito looked up from his phone, his piercing blue eyes locking onto mine. He was even more intimidating than I had expected, with a strong jawline and a mop of messy black hair. I smiled and tried to make small talk, but Kaito barely acknowledged me. Instead, he turned back to his phone, dismissing me. I felt a surge of annoyance at his rudeness. "Excuse me," I said, my voice cool. "But I think you dropped your phone." Kaito looked up, his eyes flashing with anger. "I didn't drop my phone," he snapped. "And even if I did, I wouldn't need some clueless new student picking it up for me." The group gasped in shock at Kaito's outburst, and I felt my face heat up with embarrassment. Min-ji jumped in, trying to diffuse the situation. "Hey, let's not fight on the first day, okay?" But it was too late. The damage was done. Kaito and I had clearly gotten off on the wrong foot. As we headed to our next class, I was surprised to find that we all had the same schedule. "Looks like we're stuck together for the rest of the day," Taro said with a grin. As we walked down the corridor, Leela mentioned that our first class was English Literature. "I love this class," she said. "Our teacher, Ms. Tanaka, is amazing." I smiled, feeling a sense of relief that I would be spending the rest of the day with this diverse and interesting group of students. But I couldn't shake off the feeling that Kaito Yamato was going to be a lot more trouble than I had anticipated.
