Chapter 2: Discovering the Heart
Part 2
As Minako and Ami delved into the romance section of the library, Minako’s gaze flitted from one book cover to another, yet her mind became increasingly distracted by her companion. The way Ami furrowed her brow while reading, the slight smile that danced on her lips at a particularly good line, and how she always encouraged Minako's whimsical ideas—all of it began to simmer in her consciousness, stirring something deeper within her. "What about this one?" Minako declared suddenly, holding up a novel with an elegant cover. "The title is 'Whispers of the Heart.' It sounds so mysterious!" But as she held the book aloft, her eyes drifted back to Ami, who was now absentmindedly pushing her glasses up her nose, the sunlight framing her in a halo of gold. It struck Minako then; the qualities she admired were all right in front of her. The laughter they shared, the unwavering support, and the comfort of their long-time friendship—all of it coalesced into an overwhelming realization. Her heart raced as clarity dawned upon her. The qualities she loved were embodied by none other than her best friend, Ami. A sudden bolt of nervous energy surged through her. Had she really harbored a crush on Ami all this time? In a daze, Minako placed the book back on the shelf. "Ami, I think I need to take a break. I’ll just be outside for a moment," she said, attempting to appear casual despite her heart's rapid pace. As she stepped into the sunlight, Minako leaned against the cool stone wall of the library. The warmth of the sun wasn’t nearly as comforting as the whirlwind of emotions swelling within her. It felt like the ground had shifted beneath her, and now more than ever, she was certain she needed guidance. Taking out her phone, she quickly navigated to Usagi's contact. Her best friend had been through enough romantic mishaps to fill volumes of her own—and maybe she could help Minako figure out how to confess this unexpected crush. A few moments later, Usagi picked up, her cheerful voice ringing through the speaker. "Minako! What's up? You sound kind of weird! Are you in trouble?" "Not trouble, but... I need your advice! Can we meet? It’s super important!" "Ooh, is it about a boy?" Usagi teased, her playful nature shining through. "Sort of… but it’s more complicated than that!" "Okay, where are you? I’ll be there in a flash!" Minako hurriedly responded with a location, her mind racing ahead with possibilities, each one more daunting than the last. Confessing her feelings was one thing, but facing the reality of those feelings was an entirely different challenge. As she waited, a mixture of anxiety and anticipation began to knot in her stomach. Would Usagi understand? What if she didn’t? But more than anything, Minako couldn’t shake the thrill of knowing that she wanted to be honest with herself—and, ultimately, with Ami.
