Madness and Mayhem

Part 6

Sol's eyes widened as she gazed around at the absurd scene unfolding before her. Astra, the Star Nymph of Riddle River, chuckled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Welcome to Wonderland, Sol," she said. "Here, madness is the norm." To their left, a group of playing cards sat on a blanket, painting white roses red. One of the cards, a young man with a mischievous grin, looked up and caught Sol's eye. "Ah, new blood!" he exclaimed, waving a brush in greeting. Sol's gaze drifted to a nearby floral arrangement, where a bouquet of flowers seemed to be arguing with each other. "I'm a rose!" one of the flowers insisted. "No, you're a tulip!" another retorted. Astra leaned in, her voice low. "The residents of Wonderland often get... carried away. But don't worry, they'll leave us alone. For now." As they walked along the riverbank, Sol noticed that the river seemed to be flowing in multiple directions at once. She felt a sense of disorientation, as if her sense of reality was being turned upside down. Astra smiled. "The Riddle River is a shape-shifter. It adapts to the moods and emotions of those who travel on it." Sol's thoughts turned to Alec, the enigmatic patient she had met at Rutledge Asylum. What was he doing in this strange world? And how was she going to find him? As if reading her thoughts, Astra said, "Alec is here, Sol. But we need to be careful. The Queen of Hearts is... interested in him." Sol's eyes narrowed. "What does she want with him?" Astra's expression turned serious. "The Queen of Hearts collects... curiosities. And Alec is a curiosity unlike any other." Sol's determination hardened. She was going to find Alec, no matter what. As they continued along the riverbank, they encountered a group of creatures that defied explanation. A cat with multiple tails and eyes that changed color like a chameleon's. A being made entirely of playing cards, who introduced himself as the Card Kingdom's ambassador. Sol's mind reeled as she tried to keep up with the ever-changing landscape. Astra, however, seemed to navigate the chaos with ease. "Don't worry, Sol," she said, as they paused to watch a group of creatures engage in a lively debate about the meaning of life. "Wonderland can be overwhelming at first. But you'll get used to it." Sol raised an eyebrow. "Get used to it? I don't think that's possible." Astra chuckled. "Perhaps not. But you'll learn to adapt. And who knows? You might even find a piece of yourself here in Wonderland." Sol's thoughts turned to her own life, her studies in Anthropology and Botany, and her experiences with her mom, a psychologist at Rutledge Asylum. She had always been drawn to the unknown, the unexplained. And Wonderland was the ultimate mystery. As the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the landscape, Astra led Sol to a small clearing. In the center of the clearing stood a beautiful, delicate tree with branches that seemed to be made of crystal. "Welcome to the Oracle's Tree," Astra said, her voice filled with reverence. "Here, we can find answers to our questions. And perhaps, we can find Alec." Sol's heart skipped a beat as she approached the tree. She felt a sense of trepidation, but also a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she would find the answers she was looking for in this strange and wondrous land.
