An Unexpected Request
Part 22
As they neared the end of the forest, the trees grew thinner and the air lighter, Scorch and Sir Valoric could sense a change in their surroundings. They had almost forgotten about Akira and her warriors, but as they rode, a familiar figure emerged from the trees. Akira, the challenger of Kael's tribe, stood before them once again, this time with a young woman in tow. The young woman, who appeared to be in her early teens, looked up at Scorch and Sir Valoric with wide eyes. She was petite, with a mop of curly brown hair and a determined look on her face. Akira smiled, her eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. "Ah, Sir Valoric, I see you're still on your journey," she said, her voice husky as ever. "I've brought my trainee, Eira, to meet you. She's been training with me for a few months now, and I think she's ready to learn from someone with your... particular set of skills." Eira looked up at Akira, then back at Scorch and Sir Valoric, her eyes shining with excitement. Akira continued, "I've been teaching her the ways of combat, but I think she could learn a great deal more from someone with your experience, Sir Valoric. Would you be willing to take her along on your journey?" Sir Valoric raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by the request. Scorch, however, felt a pang of curiosity. Who was this young woman, and what did Akira hope to gain by sending her along with them? "I don't know, Akira," Sir Valoric said slowly. "We're on a bit of a mission, and it's not exactly safe." Akira smiled, her eyes glinting with amusement. "I'm aware of that, Sir Valoric. But I think Eira could be a valuable asset to your party. And besides, I have a feeling that she'll be able to hold her own in a fight. Don't you, Eira?" Eira nodded eagerly, her face set in a determined expression. Scorch couldn't help but feel a little sorry for the young woman. She looked like she was in over her head, but there was something about her that reminded Scorch of herself when she was younger. Sir Valoric hesitated, clearly weighing his options. Scorch could sense his unease, but she also knew that he was a fair man. After a moment, he nodded. "Very well, Akira. We'll take Eira along on our journey. But you have to promise me one thing: you'll be responsible for her if she gets hurt." Akira laughed, a throaty sound. "I wouldn't have it any other way, Sir Valoric. Thank you, I owe you one." With that, Akira turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving Scorch, Sir Valoric, and Eira to continue their journey together. Scorch couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead, and what kind of challenges they would face with Eira in tow. But for now, she was content to ride on, the three of them forming an unlikely trio as they made their way out of the forest.
